SOS Suppressor Buying Guide
Science of Suppression (SOS) builds its suppressors in Queen Creek, Arizona, from 17-4 stainless, and every one is full-auto rated. We carry the Einstein K, Dark Matter K, Dark Matter L and Atom 46, and we can get the Einstein L and Nebula 36 for you. The guide below shows how they compare and where each one fits.
How to Choose an SOS Suppressor
SOS keeps its lineup simple: one family per caliber, each in a short K and a long L. Pick the family for your caliber, then decide whether length or sound matters more.
A few things to know
- Names: Einstein is 5.56 and 6mm ARC. Dark Matter is .30 cal for .308 and 300 BLK. Nebula 36 and Atom 46 are the multi-caliber cans. K is the short version and L is the long one.
- Build: every SOS is 17-4 hardened stainless steel with no exposed welds, finished in high-temp Cerakote in black or FDE.
- Mounts: every SOS has a HUB (1.375x24) rear and comes with a direct thread adapter, 1/2x28 on the Einstein line and 5/8x24 on the Dark Matter and Atom 46. See Mounts.
- Full-auto: every model is full-auto rated, up to 8 magazines in a row.
Choosing by configuration
- Short 5.56 or 6mm ARC: the Einstein K, 5.25 in. and 10.3 oz.
- Quieter 5.56: the Einstein L, 6.875 in., built for maximum sound reduction.
- Short .308 or subsonic 300 BLK: the Dark Matter K, 6.375 in.
- Full-size .308: the Dark Matter L, 8.125 in., with reduced flash and minimal point-of-impact shift.
- One can for 9mm, 5.56 and .350 Legend: the Nebula 36.
- Big bore, from .45 ACP to 45-70: the Atom 46.

What Science of Suppression Is Known For
Science of Suppression is a suppressor maker in Queen Creek, Arizona, started by three people with backgrounds in machining, manufacturing and practical firearms use. Its cans are made in Arizona start to finish, with local vendors. The goal from day one was a suppressor that performs like a top-shelf can at a price every gun owner can afford.
- Value: SOS makes some of the most economical suppressors we carry.
- Simple, tough build: 17-4 hardened stainless steel, full-penetration welds and no exposed welds. No modular parts, no gimmicks.
- Full-auto rated: every model, up to 8 magazines in a row.
- Ready to mount: every SOS comes with a direct thread adapter and has a HUB rear for any HUB mount you already own.
- Lifetime warranty: SOS repairs or replaces a can that fails from a defect. If you damage one yourself, like running 300 BLK through a 5.56 can, SOS rebuilds it and sells you a replacement for the cost of materials and labor.
SOS Einstein Suppressors: Einstein K and Einstein L
The Einstein is SOS's 5.56 and 6mm ARC family. Both come with a 1/2x28 direct thread adapter.
SOS Einstein K
The Einstein K is the short Einstein: 5.25 in. and 10.3 oz of 17-4 stainless, built for SBRs and carbines where every inch counts.
Calibers: 5.56, 6mm ARC | Length: 5.25 in. | Weight: 10.3 oz | Mount: HUB, 1/2x28 direct thread adapter included | Full-auto: Yes
It's designed for reduced back pressure, and it's a good fit on a short-barreled AR where you want a short, light can that can take hard use.
What owners and reviewers found
Al, Einstein K owner: "I think it has great value for the money, with great rapid fire performance."
Inside Safariland, February 2026: Ran the Einstein K and Dark Matter K on direct-impingement AR SBRs with .223 and subsonic 300 BLK, called the performance "nothing short of outstanding" and reported "very little gas blowback." Read the review
SOS Einstein L
The Einstein L takes the Einstein K's design and stretches it to 6.875 in. for maximum sound reduction.
Calibers: 5.56, 6mm ARC | Length: 6.875 in. | Weight: About 18.8 oz with mount | Mount: HUB, 1/2x28 direct thread adapter included | Full-auto: Yes
Einstein L or K? The L is 1.625 in. longer and built for more sound reduction. Pick it for a 16 in. rifle or a range gun where length doesn't matter.
SOS Dark Matter Suppressors: Dark Matter K and Dark Matter L
The Dark Matter is SOS's .30 cal family for .308, 7.62 NATO and 300 BLK. Both come with a 5/8x24 direct thread adapter.
| Length | Weight | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Matter K | 6.375 in. | 14 oz | Short rifles, 300 BLK SBRs |
| Dark Matter L | 8.125 in. | 19 oz | 16 in. and longer .308 rifles, bolt guns |
SOS Dark Matter K
The Dark Matter K is the short Dark Matter: 6.375 in. and 14 oz for .308 and 300 BLK.
Calibers: .308, 7.62 NATO, 300 BLK | Length: 6.375 in. | Weight: 14 oz | Mount: HUB, 5/8x24 direct thread adapter included | Full-auto: Yes
It's a natural fit on a 300 BLK SBR running subsonic ammo, and short enough for a .308 carbine you move around with. If you shoot mostly .308 on a 16 in. or longer barrel, the Dark Matter L is built for more sound reduction.
What owners and reviewers found
Patrick, Dark Matter K owner: "Is a great entry can."
Inside Safariland, February 2026: Tested it with the Einstein K on direct-impingement AR SBRs, including 230 gr subsonic 300 BLK, and called the performance "nothing short of outstanding." Read the review
SOS Dark Matter L
The Dark Matter L is the full-size Dark Matter: 8.125 in. and 19 oz, built for maximum sound reduction on .308.
Calibers: .308, 7.62 NATO, 300 BLK and smaller | Length: 8.125 in. | Weight: 19 oz | Mount: HUB, 5/8x24 direct thread adapter included | Full-auto: Yes
The extra length gives it more internal volume for sound reduction, plus reduced flash and minimal point-of-impact shift. Pick it for a 16 in. and longer .308, a precision rifle or a hunting rifle.
Dark Matter L or K? The L is 1.75 in. longer and 5 oz heavier, and built for more sound reduction. The K is the better choice on a short barrel.
SOS Nebula 36 and Atom 46 Multi-Caliber Suppressors
A multi-caliber can is a jack of all trades, master of none: one suppressor for your pistol caliber carbine, your AR and your big-bore rifle, at the cost of some sound reduction on the smaller calibers. It's a great first suppressor if you don't know where to start, and you can add caliber-specific cans later.
SOS Atom 46
The Atom 46 is SOS's big-bore multi-caliber can: 6.625 in. and 14 oz, rated up to .46 cal and magnum rated.
Calibers: Up to .46: .45 ACP, 9mm, .458 SOCOM, .450 Bushmaster, 45-70 and magnum rifles | Length: 6.625 in. | Weight: 14 oz | Mount: HUB, 5/8x24 direct thread adapter included | Full-auto: Yes
It's built for shooters who want one can across pistols, .458 SOCOM and lever guns like a 45-70. At 6.625 in., it's shorter than most .46 cal cans we carry.
Because the bore is big enough for .45 cal bullets, it gives up some sound on smaller calibers like 5.56 and .308 compared to a dedicated can.
SOS Nebula 36
The Nebula 36 is SOS's .36 cal multi-caliber can: 6 in. long, rated for everything from 5.56 to 9mm and .350 Legend.
Calibers: Up to .36: 5.56, 9mm, .350 Legend | Length: 6 in. | Weight: About 16.1 oz with mount | Mount: HUB, 1/2x28 direct thread adapter included (5/8x24 available) | Full-auto: Yes
Nebula 36 or Atom 46? The Nebula's smaller bore makes it the better fit if your guns stop at 9mm, 5.56 and .350 Legend. Pick the Atom 46 if you shoot .45 ACP or big-bore rifles.

SOS Mounts
Every SOS has a HUB (1.375x24) rear and comes with a direct thread adapter, so it's ready to thread onto your barrel out of the box.
| Model | Adapter included |
|---|---|
| Einstein K and Einstein L | 1/2x28 direct thread |

- Direct thread: the included adapter is the simplest setup for one rifle. For a second 1/2x28 or 5/8x24 adapter, the Diligent Defense Ti Direct Thread Adapter is a light titanium option.
- Other thread pitches: go with the bigger brands. The SilencerCo Bravo Direct Thread Mount and the Dead Air direct thread mounts come in about ten thread pitches each, including 9/16x24, .578x28, 3/4x24 and metric threads, and both fit the HUB rear on an SOS.
- Quick-detach: a HUB adapter like the Plan-B by Q lets you move an SOS between rifles with Plan B muzzle devices.
