Multi-Caliber Suppressor Buying Guide

A multi-caliber suppressor lets one can cover your rifles, pistol caliber carbines and big-bore guns. This guide compares the multi-caliber suppressors we carry, explains .36 cal vs. .46 cal, and shows where each one fits, with specs, sound test results and notes from our sales team.

The basics

What Is a Multi-Caliber Suppressor?

A multi-caliber suppressor (also called a multi-cal, universal or hybrid suppressor) is built around a bore big enough to pass the largest bullet it's rated for, so one can covers several calibers and several guns. Most are rated for pistols, subguns and rifles, and many are modular, so you can run them short on a compact host or long for more suppression.

Multi-cal suppressors trade some caliber-specific performance for versatility. A can built to pass a 45-70 or .338 Lapua bullet has more room around a 5.56 or 9mm bullet than a dedicated can does, and that extra room costs some sound reduction. For years, that was the trade-off: one suppressor could cover several calibers, but it usually gave up performance compared with a dedicated can.

The Omega 36M changed that. It was the first multi-cal suppressor to really get it right, like a .30 cal suppressor, a 9mm suppressor and a 5.56 suppressor built into one bigger platform. Several brands now build .36 cal cans along the same lines, including Precision Armament, Otter Creek Labs, HUXWRX, Rugged and Griffin.

The .46 cal cans still give up the most on smaller calibers, because their bore is sized for .45 cal bullets. That's why makers sell caliber-specific end caps. On a Hybrid 46 DTM, the difference between shooting 5.56 through the .46 end cap and through a 5.56 end cap is about 8 dB in our experience, and .30 cal through the .46 end cap gives up about 4 to 5 dB. If you're going to shoot 5.56 through a .46 can, get the 5.56 end cap.

Before you buy

Multi-Caliber or Dedicated Suppressor?

A multi-cal suppressor can make sense as a first can if you want one suppressor to cover several guns. One can goes on your hunting rifle, your semi-autos and your big bore. Later, you can add caliber-specific suppressors and keep the multi-cal suppressor for the guns that don't have their own.

What you trade for that flexibility:

  • Size and weight. A can sized for the biggest caliber it handles is usually longer or heavier than a dedicated can for a smaller one, and you'll feel it on a pistol or a light carbine.
  • Sound on small calibers. A .46 bore gives up the most on 5.56 and 9mm. Caliber-specific end caps can recover some of that sound performance.
  • Accessories. The maker usually gives you one mount. You'll want a mount or muzzle device for each gun and a piston or booster for pistols, so budget a few hundred dollars in accessories.
  • Duty ratings. Some of the lightest titanium multi-cal suppressors are semi-auto rated (no full-auto fire) or light duty on rifles (meant for slower, steady fire, not fast strings). See How to choose.

If most of your shooting is one caliber, a dedicated 5.56 suppressor, .30 cal suppressor or pistol suppressor will usually be shorter, lighter or quieter on that gun. If you shoot several calibers, start with a multi-cal suppressor.

Where to start

How to Choose a Multi-Caliber Suppressor

Start with the biggest caliber you plan to shoot, then the gun you'll shoot most. Buy for that gun and let the versatility cover the rest.

A few things to know

  • Bore size: .36 cal cans pass bullets up to about .36 in.: 9mm, .357 Magnum, 5.56, 300 BLK, .308, 350 Legend, 8.6 BLK and .338 Lapua, as long as the can is rated for the cartridge. The Anthem-38 V2 is .375 cal. The .46 cal cans add .45 ACP, 10mm, .44 Magnum, .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM and 45-70.
  • End caps: most multi-cal suppressors take caliber-specific end caps (also called front caps), the cap on the front of the can. A smaller hole matched to your bullet makes the can quieter. On a .46 cal can it's a big jump (see the Hybrid 46 DTM numbers above). On a .36 cal suppressor, swapping to a 5.56 end cap isn't as big a jump. You might squeeze out an extra 3 to 4 dB, so you'll hear an improvement, but it's less significant.
  • Modular length: the Omega 36M, Hybrid 46M, Free Bird, Ramblin Man, Enduro and Tiduro come apart into a short and a long setup. Take a section off and the can is shorter and lighter for a compact gun; put it back on and it's quieter.
  • Mounts: most use a HUB (1.375x24) rear thread, the standard most brands make their mounts for, so HUB mounts from most brands fit. The Omega 36M and Hybrid 46M use SilencerCo's Charlie mount instead. See Mounts and end caps.
  • Test numbers: where a can has been tested, we show Silencer Summit dBA readings (lower is quieter) and PEW Science ratings (higher is better). See Sound test results.

Choosing by caliber and use

  • One can for 9mm, 5.56 and .308 up to .338 Lapua: a .36 cal can like the Omega 36M, TiTrex 360Ti, Universe 36 or FLOW Range 36 Ti.
  • Lever guns, .45 ACP and straight-wall big bores: a .46 cal can like the Hybrid 46M, Hybrid 46 DTM, Primal, Bushwhacker 46 2.0 or Atom 46.
  • .338 and .375 cartridges: the Anthem-38 V2, with a .375 bore.
  • Light hunting rifles: the Alaskan360Ti, Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36, TiTrex 360Ti or FLOW Range 36 Ti; in .46 cal, the Ramblin Man.
  • Gas guns where back pressure matters: the FLOW Range 36 Ti, or the Universe 36 with a low back pressure end cap.
  • .22 LR and cast lead: a can you can take apart, like the Bushwhacker 36 or Bushwhacker 46 2.0. The Enduro and Tiduro are also rated for .22 LR.
  • Pistols: a pistol with a tilting barrel (like a Glock or SIG P320) needs a piston or booster so it cycles with the can on. The Bushwhacker 36 and Bushwhacker 46 2.0 come with a booster housing (add the piston for your barrel thread). The Primal comes with Dead Air's P-Series adapter, which lets it take Dead Air's boosters and 3-lug mounts. For all the rest, you'll buy the pistol mount or adapter separately.
  • Full-auto: most are full-auto rated. The Alaskan360Ti, Enduro and Tiduro are semi-auto rated, the Ramblin Man is full-auto rated on pistol cartridges only, and the TiTrex 360Ti and Free Bird ratings depend on the caliber and barrel.

Quick picks

Which Multi-Caliber Suppressor Should You Buy?

One can for most guns

Omega 36M

Covers 9mm pistols and PCCs, 5.56 and .308 rifles, and up to .338 Lapua. It runs 4.9 in. short or 6.85 in. long, depending on whether the front section is on. It's the model our sales team most often recommends when someone wants one suppressor for most of their guns.

Light and quiet .36

TiTrex 360Ti

Measured the same as the Omega 36M on a 20 in. .308 rifle in Silencer Summit testing. The suppressor weighs 7.2 oz by itself, or 9.2 oz with its mount and front cap.

Big bore, short or long

Hybrid 46M

Covers 9mm to .45 ACP pistols and 5.56 to 45-70 and .460 Weatherby Mag rifles. It runs 5.78 in. short or 7.72 in. long, depending on whether the front section is on.

Big bore on a HUB mount

Hybrid 46 DTM

The same .46 cal bore as the Hybrid 46M, but one length (7.61 in., no short setup) on a HUB (1.375x24) mount, the thread most brands make mounts for. One of the lower-priced .46 cal cans we carry.

Short big bore

Atom 46

At 6.625 in. and 14 oz, the shortest .46 cal can we carry that doesn't come apart, and the lowest-priced .46 cal can we carry.

PCCs and adjustable back pressure

Universe 36

Swap the end cap on the front to set low or high back pressure, meaning less or more gas coming back through the action, for each gun. PEW Science rated it 60.0 on a 9mm HK SP5 subgun, its best result.

Gas guns

FLOW Range 36 Ti

On semi-auto rifles and PCCs, its flow-through design sends gas forward and out the front of the can instead of back through the action toward your face. 8.4 oz in titanium.

Lightest .36

Alaskan360Ti

5.6 oz in titanium by itself (6.6 oz with its direct thread mount), rated from 9mm to .338 Lapua. Semi-auto rated, so no full-auto fire.

Lightest .46

Ramblin Man

Titanium, 6 oz short or 8.8 oz long. Light duty on rifles, meaning slower, steady fire rather than fast strings; full-auto rated on pistol cartridges.

Hunting rifles

Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36

10.4 oz in 17-4 stainless steel, with no minimum barrel length on any caliber it's rated for, so it works on short hunting barrels. One of the lower-priced .36 cal cans we carry; the mount is sold separately.

Tough and compact .36

Alaskan360

6.6 in. and 9.4 oz in 17-4 stainless steel, full-auto rated, from 9mm up to .338 Lapua and 300 RUM. A 5/8x24 direct thread mount is in the box.

Cleanable for .22 LR and cast lead

Bushwhacker 36 and Bushwhacker 46 2.0

The Ratchet-LOK end cap unscrews so you can take the can apart and clean it, which matters with dirty rimfire and lead bullets. Both come with a booster housing for tilting-barrel pistols.

.22 LR to .338 Lapua, adjustable length

Enduro and Tiduro

Add or remove aluminum baffle sections to make it longer and quieter for rifles or shorter for pistol calibers. The Tiduro runs 4.75 to 9.25 in. Both are semi-auto rated, so no full-auto fire.

Lower-priced modular .36

Free Bird

17-4 stainless steel, rated from 9mm to .338 Lapua. It comes apart into a short or long setup (7.47 in. long). One of the lower-priced .36 cal cans we carry.

.338 and .375 cartridges

Anthem-38 V2

A .375 cal bore, so it passes .338 and .375 bullets as well as .30 cal and smaller. 7.2 in., 17-4 stainless steel, full-auto rated.

Pistols and subguns on a .46

Primal

Comes with Dead Air's P-Series adapter, which lets it take Dead Air's pistol boosters and 3-lug subgun mounts (sold separately), plus a 5/8x24 direct thread mount for rifles.

.36 cal

.36 Cal Multi-Caliber Suppressors

These cover 9mm pistols and PCCs through .308 and .338 Lapua rifles. The ODIN Works cans are bored for 9mm, and the Anthem-38 V2 at the end is .375 cal for .338 and .375 cartridges. Weights and lengths are without a mount unless noted.

SilencerCo Omega 36M

The Omega 36M is the model our sales team most often recommends when someone wants one suppressor to cover most of their guns. Pull the front module and it drops from 6.85 in. to 4.9 in., so it works on an SBR or subgun as well as a bolt gun.

Calibers: 5.7x28 to 9mm on pistols; 5.56 to .338 Lapua Mag and 350 Legend on rifles  |  Length: 4.9 to 6.85 in.  |  Weight: 9.8 to 12.5 oz  |  Mount: Charlie; Charlie ASR mount and 9mm front cap included  |  Full-auto: Yes, both lengths

Minimum barrel lengths are 10 in. for 5.56, 16 in. for .308, 18 in. for .338 Lapua and 20 in. for .300 Win Mag. Pistol use takes the Charlie Piston Mount and a piston. Around the shop, subsonic 8.6 BLK with the 36M short and .38 Special out of a lever gun are favorites. On a 10 in. 5.56 SBR or a subgun, most people run it short; for a precision .308 or .338, leave it long.

Pick it over the Hybrid 46M if you don't need .45 cal or big bore. It's about 0.9 in. shorter and 2.4 oz lighter in each configuration.

Test results and reviews

Silencer Summit: Measured the same as the TiTrex 360Ti on a 20 in. .308 in the long configuration. See Sound test results.

American Rifleman: Measured 130.6 to 134.6 dB at the shooter's ear in the long configuration and 133.8 to 141.7 dB short on .350 Legend, .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua, on SilencerCo's indoor range. Read the review

Gearmaster, Omega 36M owner: “It is so versatile that I still use it regularly despite having more than a dozen cans now.”

Daniel, Omega 36M owner: “Where it shines for me is in the ‘K’ config on a short 300BLK.”

Otter Creek Labs Universe 36

The Universe 36 takes anything .36 cal or smaller that fits down the bore, from .22 LR and 9mm to .338 Lapua. It's 3D printed in Inconel and built for full-auto and belt-fed use.

Calibers: .36 and smaller: .22 LR, 9mm, .357 Mag, 5.56, 300 BLK, .308, 30-30, 350 Legend, 8.6 BLK, .338 Lapua  |  Length: 7 in.  |  Weight: 14 oz  |  Material: Inconel, DMLS printed  |  Mount: HUB; mount not included  |  Full-auto: Yes  |  Barrel limit: 24 in. on .338 Lapua

It ships with a 9mm low back pressure (vented) end cap. Optional end caps cover 9mm high back pressure and 5.56 and 7.62 in low or high back pressure, and they change with a socket or adjustable wrench, so you can set it up for each gun. Otter Creek Labs is known for lower-priced suppressors with strong sound reduction, and the Universe 36 is one of the lower-priced .36 cal cans we carry.

Test results and reviews

PEW Science: Rated 28.4 on a 10.3 in. MK18 with the solid 5.56 end cap, a Top 50 result in its rankings, 25.4 on a 20 in. .308 and 60.0 on a 9mm HK SP5 with subsonic ammo (SSS.6.223). PEW Science found its back pressure isn't severe, even with solid end caps.

Chris, Universe 36 owner: “.38 special on a lever action with the high back pressure 9mm end cap was movie quiet.”

Dave B, Universe 36 owner: On PCCs: “incredibly quiet and low gas.”

Precision Armament TiTrex 360Ti

The TiTrex 360Ti is a 3D printed titanium .36 cal can for 9mm through .358 caliber: a 9mm pistol or PCC, an AR, or a bolt gun or lever gun, and it weighs 7.2 oz by itself. Precision Armament is newer to suppressors, and the TiTrex is a lightweight can with strong sound performance.

Calibers: 9mm through .358 caliber; magnum rated up to .300 RUM  |  Length: 5.9 in. by itself; 6.2 in. with mount and front cap  |  Weight: 7.2 oz by itself; 9.2 oz with mount and front cap  |  Material: Grade 5 titanium core, 17-4 XBand  |  Mount: HUB rear, Bravo-style front; titanium 5/8x24 direct thread mount, front cap and K-Brake included  |  Full-auto: Depends on caliber and barrel

There are no barrel length restrictions. Full-auto is rated heavy duty on 9mm and subsonic 300 BLK at any barrel length, light duty on 5.56 from 10.3 in. and 7.62 from 14.5 in., and semi-auto only on shorter 5.56 and 7.62 barrels. With X-CORE, Precision Armament can replace a damaged core or install a newer one at the factory. Tilting-barrel pistols need a booster mount.

Test results and reviews

Silencer Summit: Measured the same as the Omega 36M on a 20 in. .308, and quieter than the Universe 36 on a 26 in. .300 Win Mag. See Sound test results.

Kevin, TiTrex 360Ti owner: “Very light and it sounds great.”

HUXWRX FLOW Range 36 Ti

The FLOW Range 36 Ti is built around gas-gun use. Its flow-through design sends gas forward and out the front instead of back into the action, in an 8.4 oz printed titanium can rated from 9mm pistols to .338 Lapua.

Calibers: Pistols up to 9mm; rifles 17 HMR through .338 Lapua, plus .338 ARC and 8.6 BLK  |  Length: 6.67 in.  |  Weight: 8.4 oz  |  Material: Grade 5 titanium, 3D printed  |  Mount: HUB; 1/2x28 and 5/8x24 HUB direct thread adapters included  |  Full-auto: Yes  |  Barrel limits: None

We see a lot of customers running it on 9mm PCCs, and it's also a strong fit on subsonic 8.6 BLK. In our experience, if your rifle has a suppressed gas setting, you can leave it on unsuppressed with this can. For quick-detach, add the HUXWRX HUB QD adapter for HUXWRX QD muzzle devices. Plan on a detailed cleaning every 2,000 rounds. If it will only live on an AR, a dedicated 5.56 can is a better place to start.

Test results and reviews

Justin, FLOW Range 36 Ti owner: Ran it on several gas guns “without issue or re-configuration of gas systems,” with minimal point-of-impact shift.

Rugged Alaskan360

The Alaskan360 is Rugged's .360 cal can in 17-4 stainless: 6.6 in. and 9.4 oz, rated from 9mm pistols and subguns to .338 Lapua and 300 RUM.

Calibers: 9mm to .338 Lapua: 5.56, 300 BLK, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 8.6 BLK, 350 Legend, .357 Mag, .38 Special, 30-30, 9x39, 300 RUM  |  Length: 6.6 in.; 7.5 in. with direct thread mount  |  Weight: 9.4 oz; 11.1 oz with direct thread mount  |  Material: 17-4 stainless, titanium front cap  |  Mount: HUB; 5/8x24 direct thread mount included  |  Full-auto: Yes, USSOCOM firing schedule

It makes the most sense on large-caliber hunting rifles: the .36 bore handles cartridges many other suppressors can't, and it stays short enough for a rifle you carry all day. The trade-off is sound. It isn't as quiet as some longer cans. Our advice is to buy it with one gun in mind and let the versatility cover your secondary hosts. For Rugged's Dual Taper quick-detach muzzle devices, add the R.U.M. mount.

Rugged Alaskan360Ti

The Alaskan360Ti is the all-titanium version: 5.6 oz bare and 6.6 oz with its titanium direct thread mount, with the same 9mm to .338 Lapua rating.

Calibers: Same as the Alaskan360 (.360 bore)  |  Length: 6.6 in.; 6.9 in. with mount  |  Weight: 5.6 oz; 6.6 oz with mount  |  Material: Grade 5 titanium throughout  |  Mount: HUB; titanium 5/8x24 direct thread mount included  |  Full-auto: No, semi-auto rated

We see it first as a compact big-bore can. It makes the most sense on .338 Lapua and 8.6 BLK, and it'll also work on a .38 Special lever gun. It works on pistols with Rugged's Universal Cage and a piston, but the 1.6 in. diameter is big for a handgun. If you want more durability for a little more weight, or plan to put the can through some abuse, the steel Alaskan360 is the better pick.

Griffin Bushwhacker 36

The Bushwhacker 36 is the .36 cal multi-cal suppressor you can take apart. Its Ratchet-LOK end cap comes off for full cleaning, so you can run .22 LR and cast lead without worrying about buildup.

Calibers: Rifles .17 HMR to .357 Mag, including 350 Legend and .338 Lapua; pistols up to 9mm  |  Length: 7.2 in.  |  Weight: 15 oz with Plan-A Short  |  Material: 17-4 H900 stainless  |  Mount: HUB and Griffin Taper Mount; Plan-A Short HUB adapter, booster housing and 1/2x28 9mm Taper Mount EZ-Brake included  |  Full-auto: Yes

Barrel minimums run from 7 in. on 300 BLK and 9.5 in. on 5.56 to 12.5 in. on .308 and 350 Legend, 20 in. on .300 Win Mag and 24 in. on .338 Lapua and .300 RUM. Griffin's ECO-FLOW baffles cut back pressure and blowback on semi-autos, and smaller .338, .30 and .22 cal Ratchet-LOK end caps tighten up sound on those calibers. The booster piston housing in the box is for tilting-barrel 9mm pistols. For a quiet afternoon, try .38 Special through a lever gun.

Griffin Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36

The Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36 is a 10.4 oz hunting can in 17-4 stainless, rated up to .338 Lapua with no barrel length restrictions, plus 9mm pistols with a booster.

Calibers: Rifles up to .338 Lapua; 9mm pistols  |  Length: 6.09 in.  |  Weight: 10.4 oz  |  Material: 17-4 H900 stainless, tubeless  |  Mount: HUB; mount sold separately  |  Full-auto: Yes, 60 rounds then cool  |  Barrel limits: None

It gets close to titanium weight in steel, for hunters who carry a rifle all day. No mount comes in the box, so pick a HUB mount for your rifle. Tilting-barrel 9mm pistols take a booster housing, sold separately. It's one of the lower-priced .36 cal cans we carry.

Test results and reviews

Athlon Outdoors: Tim Stetzer ran it on two 16 in. .350 Legend rifles, a .300 BLK build and a 9mm Scorpion, saw minimal point-of-impact shift, and found subsonic .350 Legend and 147 gr 9mm very quiet. He bought his through Griffin's silencer-to-your-door program, which runs through Capitol Armory. Read the review

Wyatt, Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36 owner: “This thing works great for 9mm PCC and .38 lever guns.”

Resilient Free Bird

The Free Bird is Resilient's modular .36 cal can in 17-4 stainless, rated from 9mm and .357 Magnum to .338 Lapua, and one of the lower-priced .36 cal cans we carry.

Calibers: 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Mag, 300 BLK, .338 ARC, 5.56, 6mm ARC, 7.62x39, 350 Legend, 8.6 BLK, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243, 30-30, .30-06, .270, 22-250, 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC, 300 Win Mag, 300 PRC, .338 Lapua  |  Length: 7.47 in. long  |  Weight: 16.3 oz long  |  Material: 17-4 stainless  |  Mount: HUB; 1/2x28 titanium direct thread adapter and 9mm end cap included  |  Full-auto: 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Mag and subsonic 300 BLK and .338 ARC; 5.56 and 7.62x39 with a muzzle brake

The two-piece design runs long for the most suppression or short when weight and handling matter more. Rifle minimums are 7 in. on supersonic 300 BLK and .338 ARC, 10.3 in. on 5.56, 6mm ARC and 350 Legend, 12 in. on 8.6 BLK, 14.5 in. on .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 30-30 and .243, 16 in. on .30-06, .270, 6.5 PRC and 22-250, 20 in. on 7mm PRC and 300 Win Mag, 22 in. on 300 PRC and 26 in. on .338 Lapua. It takes Dead Air's E-Brake end cap.

ODIN Works Enduro

The Enduro runs from .22 LR to .338 Lapua by letting you add or remove baffles: full length on a precision rifle, or stripped down for a pistol caliber build.

Calibers: .22 LR to .338 Lapua (full configuration); 9mm pistols  |  Length: 9.7 in. full  |  Weight: 19 oz  |  Material: 17-4 stainless body and two baffles, five 7075 aluminum baffles  |  Mount: HUB thread; 1/2x28 and 5/8x24 direct thread adapters and 9mm end cap included  |  Full-auto: No, semi-auto rated

At 9.7 in. and 19 oz in full configuration, it isn't a compact can. If your main host is a short pistol or subcompact carbine and you won't shoot rifle calibers, a dedicated pistol suppressor is a better fit. If you have a precision rifle, a couple of carbines and a handgun to cover with one suppressor, the Enduro makes that practical. The Tiduro is the titanium version, 6.7 oz lighter.

ODIN Works Tiduro

The Tiduro is the titanium Enduro: the same .22 LR to .338 Lapua range and modular baffles at 12.3 oz, adjustable from 4.75 to 9.25 in.

Calibers: .22 LR to .338 Lapua Mag  |  Length: 4.75 to 9.25 in.  |  Weight: 12.3 oz  |  Material: Titanium body and two baffles, five 7075 aluminum baffles  |  Mount: HUB compatible; 9mm end cap included  |  Full-auto: No, semi-auto rated

At 12.3 oz, it's easier to carry on a lightweight precision or hunting rifle than the Enduro, and the 4.75 in. minimum setup makes it workable on compact builds where the full 9.25 in. would be too long.

Test results and reviews

Ultimate Reloader: Gavin Gear tested it on .308, .300 Win Mag and .338 ARC with lab microphones and a recoil rig. On .308, its shortest setup with a muzzle brake measured about 0.5 dB quieter than the full baffle stack. Read the review

Shortest: the Ramblin Man at 5.46 in. and the Hybrid 46M at 5.78 in. short; among cans that don't come apart, the Atom 46 is the shortest at 6.625 in. Lightest: the Ramblin Man, 6 to 8.8 oz in titanium.

SilencerCo Hybrid 46M

The Hybrid 46M is the modular big bore: 9mm through .45 ACP on pistols and 5.56 up to 45-70 and .460 Weatherby Mag on rifles, in a long or short setup.

Calibers: 9mm to .45 ACP, including 10mm; 5.56 to 45-70, .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, .338 Lapua, up to .460 Wby Mag  |  Length: 5.78 to 7.72 in.  |  Weight: 12.2 to 14.9 oz  |  Material: 17-4 stainless, titanium, Inconel  |  Mount: Charlie; Charlie ASR mount and .46 cal front cap included  |  Full-auto: Yes, both lengths

Minimum barrels are 10 in. for 5.56, 16 in. for .308, 45-70 and .458 SOCOM, and 18 in. for magnums through .338 Lapua. Our team sees three places it stands out: covering a lot of guns with one can, big rifle rounds on lever guns and straight-wall hunting rifles (45-70, .458 SOCOM, .450 Bushmaster and .45 Long Colt), and .45 cal subguns and PCCs. It was among the best-sounding suppressors we've run on a .45 ACP Kriss Vector.

It's big and heavy, and it's a high back pressure design, so on a semi-auto rifle we'd rather put you in a low back pressure can. If your biggest caliber is .308 or .338 Lapua, the Omega 36M is shorter and lighter.

RECOIL: Mike Searson ran it on a .357 lever gun, a 5.56 AR, a 7.62 NATO Remington 700 and a 9mm Glock 19, and found it sounded good enough short on the bolt gun to run it short only. Read the review

Kirkham, Hybrid 46M owner: Two hogs on .458 SOCOM so far: “The flash is very low and does not mess up the NVGs or the thermal scope.”

Stephen, Hybrid 46M owner: “Finally suppressed my 45/70. This is a game changer.”

SilencerCo Hybrid 46 DTM

The Hybrid 46 DTM (SilencerCo also calls it the Hybrid 46 DT) is the original Hybrid 46 on a HUB (Bravo) mount, in one length: 7.61 in., with no short setup. It used to ship with an ASR mount; SilencerCo dropped the ASR mount and lowered the price, and it's one of the lower-priced .46 cal cans we carry.

Calibers: 9mm to .45 ACP; 5.56 to 45-70, including .458 SOCOM; magnum rated up to .460 Wby Mag  |  Length: 7.61 in.  |  Weight: 14.1 oz  |  Material: 17-4 stainless, titanium  |  Mount: HUB (Bravo); 5/8x24 Bravo direct thread mount and .46 cal front cap included  |  Full-auto: Yes  |  Barrel limits: 8 in. on .458 SOCOM; 16 in. on 45-70; 18 in. on magnums through .338 Lapua

Our team sees it as a durable all-around can, especially for 45-70. It's also a great fit on lever guns in .45 Long Colt and .44 Special, and on the bigger calibers that don't get shot as often. Pair it with a dedicated .22 LR suppressor and nearly everything in your safe is covered.

If you'll shoot 5.56 through it, get the 5.56 end cap: in our experience it's about 8 dB quieter on 5.56 than the .46 cap, and a .30 cal cap is worth about 4 to 5 dB on .30 cal. Pistols take the Bravo Piston Mount and a piston.

Phillip, Hybrid 46 DTM owner: Hog hunts with .450 Bushmaster and .458 SOCOM: “There are 5 of us and we have 7 of these suppressors. They are excellent.”

Mark, Hybrid 46 DTM owner: Works on .45 and 9mm pistols, but it “really shines on a 45 colt lever gun or 38 special lever gun.”

Dead Air Primal

The Primal is Dead Air's do-everything can: a .458 bore rated from 9mm and .45 ACP to 45-70 and .458 SOCOM, with an energy rating up to .338 Lapua.

Calibers: 9mm to .45 ACP; 5.56 to .338 Lapua energy; .458 SOCOM, .450 Bushmaster, 45-70  |  Length: 7.9 in.  |  Weight: 16.4 oz  |  Material: 17-4 PH stainless  |  Mount: HUB; 5/8x24 direct thread mount and HUB to P-Series adapter included  |  Full-auto: Yes  |  Barrel limits: None

The P-Series adapter in the box opens up Dead Air's pistol boosters and 3-lug mounts, so it's ready for pistols and subguns as well as rifles. Heavy subsonic 45-70 out of a suppressed lever gun is one of the combinations our team likes most. The one caliber it doesn't cover is .22 LR. At 7.9 in. and 16.4 oz it isn't small, but for the range it covers, that's a reasonable trade.

Test results and reviews

Mark, Primal owner: Bought it to test against his Hybrid 46: “These two suppressors are identical when it comes to sound suppression and build quality.”

Griffin Bushwhacker 46 2.0

The Bushwhacker 46 2.0 is the big bore Bushwhacker: rifles from .17 HMR to 45-70, .450 Bushmaster and .458 SOCOM, pistols up to .45 ACP, and a Ratchet-LOK end cap that comes off for full cleaning.

Calibers: Rifles .17 HMR to 45-70, .450 Bushmaster and .458 SOCOM, plus magnums like .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua; pistols up to .45 ACP  |  Length: 7.75 in.  |  Weight: 15.8 oz with Plan-A; 17.6 oz pistol setup  |  Material: 17-4 H900 stainless  |  Mount: HUB and Griffin Taper Mount; Plan-A Short HUB adapter, booster housing and 5/8x24 .45 cal Taper Mount EZ-Brake included  |  Full-auto: Yes

Barrel minimums are 6 in. on 300 BLK, 9.5 in. on 5.56, 10 in. on 350 Legend, 12.5 in. on .308, 16 in. on 45-70, .450 Bushmaster and .458 SOCOM (12 in. with subsonics), 20 in. on .300 Win Mag and 24 in. on .338 Lapua. Because it comes apart for cleaning, you can run .22 LR and cast lead without worrying about buildup. The optional .30 cal Paladin blast shield end cap tightens up sound on .308, 300 BLK and 6.5 Creedmoor.

Resilient Ramblin Man

The Ramblin Man is a titanium modular .46 cal can: 6 oz short or 8.8 oz long, from 9mm and .45 ACP pistols to 45-70 and 300 RUM.

Calibers: 9mm, 10mm, .45 ACP, .44 Mag, .45 Colt; 300 BLK, 5.56, 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, 7.62x39, 8.6 BLK, 350 Legend, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243, 30-30, 7mm-08, 45-70, .450 Bushmaster, .458 SOCOM, .30-06, .270, 22-250, 6.5 PRC, 7mm Mag, 7mm PRC, 300 Win Mag, 300 PRC, 300 RUM, .338 Lapua  |  Length: 5.46 in. short; 7.72 in. long  |  Weight: 6 oz short; 8.8 oz long  |  Material: 6Al-4V titanium  |  Mount: HUB; 11/16x24 direct thread mount included  |  Duty: Full-auto on pistol cartridges; light duty on rifle cartridges

It's light duty on rifles: keep it under 750 degrees F, skip high rates of fire on centerfire rifle cartridges, and don't use it with a flash hider. There are no barrel restrictions on 9mm, 10mm, .45 ACP, .44 Mag and .45 Colt. Rifle minimums run from 5 in. on subsonic 300 BLK and 7 in. supersonic to 16 in. on 45-70, 22 in. on 300 Win Mag and 300 RUM, and 28 in. on .338 Lapua. It works with Resilient's titanium tri-lug mount and booster housing.

SOS Atom 46

The Atom 46 is Science of Suppression's big-bore multi-cal suppressor: 6.625 in. and 14 oz, rated up to .46 cal from .45 ACP and 9mm to .458 SOCOM, 45-70 and magnum rifles.

Calibers: Up to .46: 9mm, .45 ACP, .458 SOCOM, .450 Bushmaster, 45-70, magnum rifles  |  Length: 6.625 in.  |  Weight: 14 oz  |  Material: 17-4 hardened stainless  |  Mount: HUB; 5/8x24 direct thread adapter included  |  Full-auto: Yes

Of the .46 cal cans we carry that don't come apart, it's the shortest, and it's the lowest-priced .46 cal can we carry. It's built for shooters who want one can across pistols, .458 SOCOM and lever guns like a 45-70. Because the bore is big enough for .45 cal bullets, it gives up some sound on smaller calibers like 5.56 and .308 compared to a dedicated can.

Multi-Caliber Suppressor Sound Test Results

Only some multi-cal suppressors have been through independent testing, so here's what's been published for the cans we carry. Silencer Summit numbers are peak dBA, averaged over five shots, with microphones beside the muzzle and at the shooter's ear. Lower is quieter. As-tested weights and lengths include the mount the can was tested with.

These .46 cal results are from 2023, with Hornady LEVERevolution 325 gr full power loads and Defiant Munitions 400 gr subsonics. The three cans landed within about 4 dBA of each other beside the muzzle and within about 1.5 dBA at the shooter's ear, and their order changed with the load. The 2023 setup used one microphone beside the muzzle and a person behind the gun, so these numbers aren't directly comparable to the 2024 to 2026 tables above.

PEW Science

PEW Science has tested the Universe 36 (SSS.6.223): 28.4 on a 10.3 in. MK18 with the solid 5.56 end cap, a Top 50 result in its rankings, 25.4 on a 20 in. .308 and 60.0 on a 9mm HK SP5 with subsonic ammo. PEW Science ratings work the other way from dB: higher means less hazard to your hearing.

Mounts and accessories

Mounts, End Caps and Accessories

Plan on accessories. Most multi-cal suppressors come with one mount, but you'll want a mount or muzzle device for each gun you move the can to, and a piston or booster for tilting-barrel pistols. Budget a few hundred dollars to set one up across your guns.

HUB and Charlie mounts

Most of the cans here use a HUB (1.375x24) rear, so HUB direct thread mounts and quick-detach adapters from most brands fit. The Omega 36M and Hybrid 46M use SilencerCo's Charlie mount instead. Dead Air KeyMo and Plan-B by Q come in Charlie versions, but HUB mounts you already own won't carry over.

End caps

Caliber-specific end caps put a smaller hole on the front of the can, matched to your bullet, which makes it quieter. On a .46 can like the Hybrid 46 DTM, a 5.56 end cap is worth about 8 dB on 5.56. On a .36 cal can, it's about 3 to 4 dB: you'll hear it, but it's less significant. The Universe 36's end caps also set back pressure, and our Otter Creek Labs guide walks through which to use. The Bushwhackers take smaller Ratchet-LOK end caps, and the TiTrex 360Ti takes Bravo-style front caps.

Pistols and subguns

Pistols with a tilting barrel (like a Glock or SIG P320) need a piston or booster so they cycle with the can on. Fixed-barrel PCCs and subguns can run direct thread or a 3-lug mount. The Bushwhacker 36 and Bushwhacker 46 2.0 come with a booster housing (add the piston for your barrel thread), and the Primal comes with Dead Air's P-Series adapter, which lets it take Dead Air's boosters and 3-lug mounts. For all the rest, plan to buy the pistol mount or adapter separately.

Each suppressor above links to its section of that brand's buying guide, where we cover the mounts, muzzle devices and end caps that fit it. You can also shop all HUB mounts.

FAQ

Multi-Caliber Suppressor FAQ

What is the best multi-caliber suppressor?

It depends on your biggest caliber and the gun you'll shoot most. For one can that covers 9mm, 5.56 and .308 up to .338 Lapua, the Omega 36M is the one our sales team points to most, and the TiTrex 360Ti measured the same on a 20 in. .308 in Silencer Summit testing at a much lighter weight. For big bores and lever guns, start with the Hybrid 46M or Hybrid 46 DTM. See the quick picks.

Are suppressors universal?

No. Every suppressor is rated for certain calibers, and the bore has to be big enough for the bullet and the can has to be able to take the pressure. A multi-caliber (universal) suppressor has a bigger bore so it can cover several calibers, but it still has a limit: .36 cal cans top out around .36 in. bullets, and .46 cal cans around .458 in.

Can I use one suppressor on multiple guns?

Yes, as long as the suppressor is rated for each caliber. Put a mount or muzzle device on each gun and move the can between them. Tilting-barrel pistols need a piston or booster.

Is there a suppressor for both 5.56 and 9mm?

Yes. Most multi-cal suppressors cover both. A .36 cal can like the Omega 36M, Universe 36, TiTrex 360Ti or FLOW Range 36 Ti is the usual pick, since a .46 bore gives up more sound on 5.56. On a 9mm pistol with a tilting barrel, you'll need a piston or booster.

Should I get a .36 cal or a .46 cal multi-caliber suppressor?

Get a .46 cal if you shoot .45 ACP, 10mm, .44 Magnum, 45-70, .450 Bushmaster or .458 SOCOM. If your biggest bullets are 9mm, .357 Magnum, .308 or .338 Lapua, a .36 cal can is usually shorter or lighter and gives up less sound on 5.56 and 9mm.

What is the best 36 cal suppressor?

For the widest use, the Omega 36M. The TiTrex 360Ti measured the same on a 20 in. .308 in Silencer Summit testing and weighs 7.2 oz by itself, the Universe 36 is a lower-priced pick with adjustable end caps, the FLOW Range 36 Ti is the gas gun pick, and the Alaskan360Ti is the lightest at 5.6 oz.

What is the best 46 cal suppressor?

The Hybrid 46M if you want a long and short setup, the Hybrid 46 DTM if you want a one-length HUB can for less money, the Primal if you want Dead Air's pistol mounts, the Bushwhacker 46 2.0 if you want to take it apart for cleaning, the Ramblin Man if weight matters most, and the Atom 46 for the shortest .46 we carry that doesn't come apart.

What is the quietest multi-caliber suppressor?

Of the multi-cal suppressors we carry with published test data, the TiTrex 360Ti and Omega 36M measured quietest on a 20 in. .308 at the Silencer Summit, and they measured the same. Sound depends on the host, the caliber and the end cap, and a .46 cal can gets a lot quieter on small calibers with a matching end cap. See Sound test results.

What is the best budget multi-caliber suppressor?

In .36 cal, the Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36, Free Bird and Universe 36 are among the lower-priced cans we carry (the Sportsman ships without a mount). In .46 cal, the Atom 46 and Hybrid 46 DTM are the lower-priced options. Budget a few hundred dollars more for mounts and accessories.

Do multi-caliber suppressors work on pistols?

Yes, if the can is rated for the caliber. Tilting-barrel pistols need a piston or booster, and fixed-barrel PCCs and subguns can use direct thread or a 3-lug mount. Most multi-cal suppressors don't come with one, so plan to buy the pistol mount separately. Most multi-cal suppressors are bigger and heavier than a dedicated pistol suppressor, so if pistols are your main use, a pistol can will be smaller.

Can I shoot .22 LR through a multi-caliber suppressor?

Some are rated for it: the Universe 36, Enduro and Tiduro list .22 LR, and the FLOW Range 36 Ti and Bushwhackers start at .17 HMR. Rimfire is dirty, so a can you can take apart, like the Bushwhacker 36 or Bushwhacker 46 2.0, is the better choice. The welded SilencerCo multi-cal suppressors aren't user serviceable, so plan on jacketed ammo with those. For regular .22 shooting, a dedicated rimfire suppressor is the better tool.

Which end cap should I use on a Hybrid 46?

Match the end cap to the bullet you shoot most. In our experience, a 5.56 end cap on the Hybrid 46 DTM is about 8 dB quieter on 5.56 than the .46 cap it ships with, and a .30 cal cap is worth about 4 to 5 dB on .30 cal. The Hybrid 46 DTM takes Bravo front caps, and the Hybrid 46M takes Charlie front caps.

What are the Hybrid 46 barrel restrictions?

On the Hybrid 46 DTM: 8 in. for .458 SOCOM, 16 in. for 45-70 and 18 in. for magnums through .338 Lapua. On the Hybrid 46M: 10 in. for 5.56, 16 in. for .308, 45-70 and .458 SOCOM, and 18 in. for magnums through .338 Lapua.

Is the Hybrid 46 HUB compatible?

The Hybrid 46 DTM is. Its rear is SilencerCo's Bravo mount, which is HUB (1.375x24), and it ships with a 5/8x24 Bravo direct thread mount. The Hybrid 46M uses SilencerCo's Charlie mount instead, so HUB mounts won't fit it.

What is the difference between the Omega 36M and Hybrid 46M?

Bore size. The Omega 36M is .36 cal, from 5.7x28 and 9mm pistols to .338 Lapua. The Hybrid 46M is .46 cal and adds .45 ACP, 10mm and big bores up to 45-70 and .460 Weatherby Mag. Both are modular on Charlie mounts, and the 36M is about 0.9 in. shorter and 2.4 oz lighter in each length. Pick the 36M unless you need .45 cal or big bore.

What is the best suppressor for 45-70?

A .46 cal can rated for it: the Hybrid 46M, Hybrid 46 DTM, Primal, Bushwhacker 46 2.0, Ramblin Man or Atom 46. Most need a 16 in. barrel for 45-70 (12 in. with subsonics on the Bushwhacker 46 2.0). Heavy subsonic 45-70 out of a suppressed lever gun is one of the more enjoyable ways to use one.

What is the lightest multi-caliber suppressor?

Of the cans we carry, the Alaskan360Ti at 5.6 oz (6.6 oz with its mount) in .36 cal, and the Ramblin Man at 6 oz short or 8.8 oz long in .46 cal. Both are titanium with lighter duty ratings: the Alaskan360Ti is semi-auto rated, and the Ramblin Man is light duty on rifles.

What is a modular suppressor?

A modular suppressor comes apart into sections so you can run it short or long. Short is handier on an SBR, subgun or pistol; long is quieter. The Omega 36M, Hybrid 46M, Free Bird, Ramblin Man, Enduro and Tiduro are all modular.

What accessories do I need for a multi-caliber suppressor?

Most multi-cal suppressors come with one mount. Plan on a few hundred dollars for the rest: a mount or muzzle device for each gun, a piston or booster for pistols, and caliber-specific end caps if you'll shoot smaller calibers through a big bore.

Is a multi-caliber suppressor a good first suppressor?

Yes. If you want one can to cover several guns, a multi-cal suppressor can handle your hunting rifle, semi-autos and big bore. Later, you can add caliber-specific suppressors and keep the multi-cal suppressor for the guns that don't have their own.

Are multi-caliber suppressors full-auto rated?

Most are. The Alaskan360Ti, Enduro and Tiduro are semi-auto rated, and the Ramblin Man is full-auto rated on pistol cartridges only. The TiTrex 360Ti's rating depends on the caliber and barrel length, the Free Bird needs a muzzle brake for full-auto on 5.56 and 7.62x39, and the Sportsman Ultra Light HD 36 is rated for 60 rounds before it needs to cool.
