PTR VENT Suppressor Buying Guide
The PTR VENT 1, VENT 2, VENT 3 and VENT Spiritus 5.56i: how PTR's PIP technology works, which VENT fits your rifle or PCC, how they compare with other top suppressors, and what PEW Science measured.
How to Choose a PTR VENT Suppressor
PTR Industries builds roller-delayed rifles and pistols in Aynor, South Carolina, and the VENT series is its line of suppressors. Every VENT is 3D printed as one solid piece, with no welds or stacked baffles, around PTR's patented Purposely Induced Porosity (PIP) technology. PTR also prints suppressors for other manufacturers and licenses its technology to other brands.
The lineup is simple. Pick the caliber, then the size:
- VENT 1: 7.62x51, .308 and 300 BLK. Titanium, 8.74 in., and the quietest .30 cal suppressor we've heard.
- VENT 2: 9mm, plus .38 Special, .357 Magnum and subsonic 300 BLK. Titanium, 8.9 oz, for PCCs and subguns.
- VENT 3: a dedicated 5.56 in titanium, 7.75 in. and 11.75 oz.
- VENT Spiritus 5.56i: a shorter 5.56 in Inconel, about 6 in., for SBRs and harder use.
PTR also builds the VENT SDM, which comes installed on its factory-suppressed 9mm SBR, the 9SDM-B. See our PTR firearms buying guide for that one.
Some of the Quietest Suppressors We've Heard
The VENT series is some of the quietest suppressors we've listened to, and the whole lineup is solid. PEW Science's independent testing backs that up:
- VENT 2: one of the top two quietest 9mm suppressors PEW Science has tested on the HK SP5. It ranked 2nd of 8 at both the muzzle and the shooter's ear in its 9mm MP5 comparison (SSS.6.184).
- VENT 1: a Suppression Rating of 57.3 on a 20 in. .308. PEW Science called its muzzle and shooter's ear results "unprecedented in PEW Science testing, on this host weapon," and it outperformed the CAT JL, CGS Hyperion, Dead Air Nomad-L and Diligent Enticer-L (SSS.6.160). On subsonic 300 BLK it rated 81.5 (SSS.6.238).
- VENT 3: 42.6 on a 10.3 in. MK18, which PEW Science called "the highest combined suppression performance on the standard untuned MK18 weapon system published by PEW Science" when it was tested in December 2023 (SSS.6.135).
- VENT Spiritus 5.56i: 44.2 on a 14.5 in. M4A1, at the top of PEW Science's M4A1 rankings when tested in January 2025 (SSS.6.176).
They're also built for low back pressure. PIP vents gas forward through every stage of the shot, so less of it comes back into your action and your face.
How PIP (Purposely Induced Porosity) Works
A conventional suppressor slows gas by bouncing it through a stack of baffles. A VENT adds regions of porous metal lattice, a kind of printed metal foam, that gas flows through. PTR puts it this way: PIP "puts controlled porous structures inside the suppressor body, creating internal geometry no machining can cut."
- Gas leaks forward in stages. PEW Science describes the blast being "purposely 'leaked' forward through every phase of combustion propagation." That's how the VENT series gets high sound reduction and low back pressure at the same time.
- First round pop is masked. PEW Science found that the VENT 2 "completely masks FRP to bystanders" on the SP5, and that FRP is "effectively nullified" on the VENT 1.
- One printed piece. The body and core print together, so there are no welds or seams. The VENT 1, 2 and 3 are titanium; the Spiritus is Inconel.
- Patented. PIP is covered by multiple U.S. patents.
PEW Science calls PIP "one of the most significant advancements in the suppressed small arms state of practice." It also shows up beyond PTR's own cans: PEW Science notes that Dillon's DRC556 uses PIP "similarly to the VENT series from PTR" (SSS.6.194).

How PTR VENT Compares
These are the matchups we get asked about most, one table per caliber. Specs are without a mount unless noted. PEW Science ratings are composite Suppression Ratings on the same host and ammo within each table, unless noted; higher is better.
VENT 1 vs. VENT 3
They're for different calibers. The VENT 1 is a .30 cal suppressor for 7.62x51, .308 and 300 BLK. The VENT 3 is a dedicated 5.56, shorter and lighter (7.75 in. and 11.75 oz vs. 8.74 in. and 12.3 oz). If you only shoot 5.56, the VENT 3 gives you more 5.56 sound reduction. If you want one can for your .308 and 300 BLK rifles, get the VENT 1.
.30 Cal: VENT 1 vs. CAT JL vs. HUXWRX Flow 762 Ti
| Length | Weight | Diameter | Material | Mount | PEW Science, 20 in. .308 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VENT 1 | 8.74 in. | 12.3 oz | 1.75 in. | Titanium | HUB | 57.3 (ear: 56) |
| CAT JL | 8.2 in. (HUB) | 13.2 oz (HUB) | 1.75 in. | Titanium | HUB or QD | Ear: 53.5 |
| HUXWRX Flow 762 Ti | 6.7 in. | 11.8 oz | 1.8 in. | Titanium | HUXWRX Torque Lock QD | 41.6 |
On the same 20 in. .308 bolt gun, the VENT 1 rated highest. PEW Science rated its shooter's ear result at 56, compared with 53.5 for the CAT JL, and found the VENT 1 outperforms the JL (SSS.6.160). The Flow 762 Ti rated 41.6 (SSS.6.113). It's the shortest and lightest of the three and is rated from 5.56 up to .300 PRC on HUXWRX's own QD mounts.
Pick the VENT 1 for the most sound reduction on .308 and 300 BLK with a HUB mount. Pick the Flow 762 Ti if you want the shortest, lightest can that also covers magnum calibers.
9mm: VENT 2 vs. CAT MOB vs. Dead Air Mojave 9
| Length | Weight | Diameter | Material | Mount | PEW Science | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VENT 2 | 7.6 in. | 8.9 oz | 1.5 in. | Titanium | Alpha (1.125x28) | HK SP5: 62.6 muzzle, 44.0 ear |
| CAT MOB | 7.39 in. (HUB) | 9.9 oz (HUB) | 1.65 in. | Titanium | HUB or QD | HK SP5: 65.0 muzzle, 50.6 ear |
| Dead Air Mojave 9 | 5.89 in. short, 7.64 in. long | 8.2 oz short, 9.6 oz long | 1.405 in. | Titanium, aluminum, stainless | Mojave piston (included) | HK P30L pistol: 58.3 long, 48.8 short |
The VENT 2 and CAT MOB are the top two 9mm suppressors in PEW Science's MP5 comparison (SSS.6.184). The VENT 2 is lighter and slimmer than the MOB, and it covers .357 Magnum and subsonic 300 BLK too.
The Mojave 9 is the compact option. It runs short or long, and in its short setup it's the lightest of the three. PEW Science tested it on an HK P30L pistol, not the SP5, so its numbers aren't directly comparable with the other two. It ranked second only to the CAT SC for combining muzzle and shooter's ear hazard reduction on that pistol (SSS.6.177).
Pick the VENT 2 for an MP5, SP5 or PCC. Pick the Mojave 9 if your main host is a 9mm handgun.
5.56: VENT 3 vs. VENT Spiritus vs. CAT WB vs. HUXWRX Flow 556 Ti
| Length | Weight | Diameter | Material | Mount | PEW Science, 10.3 in. MK18 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VENT 3 | 7.75 in. | 11.75 oz | 1.625 in. | Titanium | HUB | 42.6 |
| VENT Spiritus 5.56i | About 6 in. | 15.2 oz | 1.625 in. | Inconel | HUB | 37.5 |
| CAT WB | 5.45 in. (HUB) | 14.6 oz (HUB) | 1.6 in. | Inconel 718 | HUB or QD | 35.3 |
| HUXWRX Flow 556 Ti | 6.8 in. | 11.4 oz | 1.8 in. | Titanium | HUXWRX Torque Lock QD | 41.3 |
All four were tested on the same 10.3 in. MK18 with Federal XM193. The VENT 3 rated highest, and PEW Science found its combination of muzzle and shooter's ear suppression unprecedented in its testing (SSS.6.135). The Flow 556 Ti is the closest titanium alternative, about an inch shorter and slightly lighter, on HUXWRX's own QD system (SSS.6.167).
The Spiritus and WB are the two short Inconel cans, built for durability on short barrels. The Spiritus rated higher than the WB (SSS.6.129), and PEW Science found it has "moderately higher performance than the CAT WB" in bystander hazard reduction (SSS.6.175). On a 14.5 in. M4A1, the Spiritus rated 44.2.
Pick the VENT 3 for the most 5.56 sound reduction. Pick the Spiritus for the shortest VENT and an Inconel build.

PTR VENT Mounts
The VENT 1, VENT 3 and Spiritus use the HUB (1.375x24) rear thread, so they take HUB direct thread mounts from Dead Air, SilencerCo, Energetic Armament and YHM, and QD systems like the SilencerCo ASR, Q Plan-B, Dead Air Key-Mo and Xeno, and YHM Kurz and Phantom. The VENT 2 uses the SilencerCo Alpha (1.125x28) rear thread, which takes Alpha 3-lug mounts for MP5-style subguns and booster housings for handguns. Every VENT ships with a direct thread mount. Browse rifle mounts and pistol mounts and boosters.
How to Clean a PTR VENT Suppressor
The VENT series is printed as one piece, so you clean it with solvent instead of pulling baffles:
- Clean the muzzle end at about 1,500 rounds on centerfire rifle cartridges, or about 1,000 rounds on the VENT 2.
- Do a full cleaning at about 5,000 rounds.
- Use an approved solvent like C.A.T. 206 or Bore Tech Decimator, let the suppressor cool completely first, and follow the owner's manual. Avoid aggressive methods that could damage the internals.
- A good rule of thumb: weigh your suppressor when it's new, and clean it when it has picked up close to an ounce.
PTR VENT Suppressor FAQ
What is the quietest PTR suppressor?
For .30 cal, the VENT 1: PEW Science rated it 57.3 on a 20 in. .308 and 81.5 on subsonic 300 BLK. For 9mm, the VENT 2, one of the top two quietest 9mm suppressors PEW Science has tested on the HK SP5, at 62.7. For 5.56, the VENT 3 rated 42.6 on a 10.3 in. MK18.
What is PTR PIP technology?
Purposely Induced Porosity. VENT suppressors are 3D printed with regions of porous metal lattice that gas flows through, which leaks the blast forward in stages. That gives high sound reduction with low back pressure and very little first round pop. PIP is patented, and PEW Science calls it one of the most significant advancements in suppressed small arms.
VENT 1 vs. VENT 3: what's the difference?
Caliber. The VENT 1 is a .30 cal suppressor for 7.62x51, .308 and 300 BLK (8.74 in., 12.3 oz). The VENT 3 is a dedicated 5.56 suppressor (7.75 in., 11.75 oz). For 5.56 only, get the VENT 3; for .308 and 300 BLK, get the VENT 1.
What are the VENT 1's barrel length restrictions?
