PTR Firearms Buying Guide

PTR builds roller-delayed blowback firearms in the USA. This guide covers how roller-delayed blowback works, how the PTR 9 series relates to HK's MP5, the 9SDM-B three-stamp suppressed SBR, and The Jack 12 gauge SBS.

About PTR

PTR Industries: US-Made Roller-Delayed Firearms

PTR Industries builds roller-delayed blowback rifles and pistols in Aynor, South Carolina, with every part made in the USA. Its lineup covers 9mm (the PTR 9 series), 7.62x51, 7.62x39 (the 32 series) and 5.56 (the PTR 63), plus a 12 gauge (The Jack) and the VENT line of suppressors.

We carry two of PTR's NFA firearms:

  • 9SDM-B: a suppressed 9mm SBR on PTR's MP5-pattern 9 series, with a ported barrel, the USDA pre-suppressor and the VENT SDM suppressor installed from the factory.
  • The Jack SBS: a 12 gauge short-barreled shotgun with a 7.25 in. barrel, about 25 in. overall.

We also carry PTR's VENT suppressors, some of the quietest suppressors we've listened to. See our PTR VENT suppressor buying guide.

How it works

Roller-Delayed Blowback, Explained

Roller-delayed blowback is the operating system behind HK's G3 rifle and MP5 submachine gun, and it's what PTR builds its rifles and pistols around.

  • No gas piston. The bolt isn't locked by a rotating head or driven by a gas system. Two rollers in the bolt head rest against the barrel extension on the outside and against a wedge, called the locking piece, on the inside.
  • The rollers delay the bolt. When the cartridge fires, the rollers have to be pushed inward out of the barrel extension before the bolt can move back. That holds the breech closed until pressure drops, then the bolt cycles.
  • Why shooters want it: recoil that feels smooth and a system with a long record of reliability in service rifles and submachine guns.

The design traces from Spain's CETME rifle to HK's G3, adopted by the German army in 1959. HK then scaled it down to 9mm for the MP5 (American Rifleman).

PTR 9 series

Is a PTR an HK? The PTR 9 Series vs. the MP5

No. PTR firearms are made by PTR in South Carolina, not by Heckler & Koch. PTR describes its firearms as roller-delayed blowback designs derived from HK-pattern platforms. The PTR 9 series is PTR's version of the MP5: an MP5 clone built in the USA, in models like the 9CT, 9KT, 9R, 9RS and 9LT. If you're searching for a PTR MP5, this is it.

  • Same operating system. Roller-delayed blowback, like the MP5.
  • MP5-pattern magazines. PTR 9 series firearms use MP5-pattern magazines.
  • HK-pattern parts. Many PTR firearms work with HK-pattern furniture, optics mounts, trigger housings and accessories. Fit varies by model, so check before you buy aftermarket parts.
  • 3-lug and threaded barrels. The 9SDM-B's barrel is 3-lug and threaded 1/2x28, so it takes MP5-style 3-lug mounts and direct thread suppressors.

The 9SDM-B is the 9 series built as a dedicated suppressed SBR. It's the one we carry.

PTR 9 series SBR

PTR 9SDM-B: Factory Suppressed 9mm SBR

PTR 9SDM-B

The 9SDM-B is a complete suppressed 9mm SBR: a PTR 9 series host with a 6 in. ported barrel, the USDA pre-suppressor and the VENT SDM suppressor installed from the factory. It's built as one system, not a host with a can added later, and it's a three-stamp gun: one for the SBR and two for suppressors. It's the quietest SD-style MP5 variant we've ever heard.

Caliber: 9x19mm  |  Action: Roller-delayed blowback  |  Barrel: 6 in., ported, 3-lug and 1/2x28, 1:10 twist  |  Suppressors: USDA pre-suppressor + VENT SDM (3D printed titanium with PIP)  |  NFA items: 3: SBR, USDA, VENT SDM  |  Length: 28.75 in. extended, 22.75 in. collapsed  |  Weight: 7.12 lb unloaded  |  Stock: PTR CS1 collapsible  |  Trigger: 9 to 10 lb

The ported barrel makes standard ammo subsonic. Ports machined into the rifling grooves bleed gas before the bullet exits, bringing supersonic 9mm down to subsonic velocity, so you don't need dedicated subsonic ammo.

How the system gets so quiet. It works in three steps. First, the ported barrel bleeds gas and brings the bullet to subsonic speed. Second, the USDA, a pre-suppressor chamber, captures and slows that ported gas. Third, the VENT SDM handles what's left. PTR built the VENT SDM for this gun only, tuned for maximum sound suppression while keeping the 9SDM-B's balance, smooth recoil and compact handling. See why that makes it a three-stamp gun.

What PIP means. PIP is Purposely Induced Porosity, PTR's patented suppressor technology. A conventional suppressor slows gas by bouncing it off a stack of baffles. The VENT SDM is 3D printed in titanium with regions of porous metal lattice, a kind of printed metal foam, built into its internals. Gas flows through that lattice and leaks forward in stages instead of slamming into one baffle at a time. That gives high sound reduction with low back pressure, so less gas comes back through the action toward your face. Printing the body and core as one piece is what makes that internal shape possible; it can't be machined. More in our VENT guide's PIP section.

What the DLC coating means. DLC is diamond-like carbon, a thin, hard carbon coating bonded to the metal in a vacuum chamber. It resists abrasion and wear, has a low friction surface and adds corrosion protection (Ionbond). On the VENT SDM, it's the protective finish over the titanium.

Room to change later. The USDA is threaded for both HUB Alpha (1.125x28) and HUB Bravo (1.375x24) suppressors, so you can run a different suppressor down the road. The VENT SDM mounts on the HUB Bravo thread.

In the box: the SBR with the VENT SDM and CS1 stock installed, Magpul MBUS Pro steel front and rear sights, two 30-round steel magazines, and a hard range case. It has a 13.2 in. steel Picatinny rail, an M-LOK handguard with three rows of slots, a full-auto pattern tungsten-weighted bolt carrier, and an extended charging handle threaded for Remington 700 bolt knobs.

9SDM-B vs. 9SDM-A: PTR's 9SDM-B comes with the VENT SDM suppressor; the 9SDM-A pairs the same SBR and USDA with the VENT 2.

NFA

Why the 9SDM-B Is a Three-Stamp Gun

The 9SDM-B is three NFA items with three serial numbers, so it takes three approved ATF Form 4s:

  • Stamp 1, the SBR. The 6 in. barrel makes it a short-barreled rifle.
  • Stamp 2, the USDA. The Universal SD Adapter captures and slows ported gas before it reaches the main suppressor. Federal law defines a suppressor as any device for silencing, muffling or diminishing the report of a portable firearm (18 U.S.C. 921(a)(25)). The USDA does that job, so it's a suppressor in its own right, with its own serial number.
  • Stamp 3, the VENT SDM. The main suppressor, serialized and registered on its own.

Why it matters to you: the USDA stays on the gun as its own registered suppressor. It's threaded for HUB Alpha (1.125x28) and HUB Bravo (1.375x24), so if you run a different HUB suppressor on the 9SDM-B later, that suppressor needs its own approved Form 4 like any other.

As of January 1, 2026, the federal tax on SBRs and suppressors is $0, so all three stamps are $0. You still need three approved Form 4s, and we file all three for you in one order.

12 gauge

PTR The Jack: 12 Gauge Short-Barreled Shotgun

PTR The Jack SBS

The Jack is PTR's compact 12 gauge, built as a short-barreled shotgun with a 7.25 in. barrel and a stock, about 25 in. overall. It's made for home defense, a truck gun or breaching.

Gauge: 12 gauge, 2-3/4 and 3 in.  |  Action: Pump  |  Barrel: 7.25 in.  |  Length: About 25 in.  |  Weight: 5.5 lb unloaded  |  Capacity: 2+1  |  Safety: Cross-bolt  |  Finish: Black Cerakote

FAQ

PTR Firearms FAQ

Is PTR Industries still in business?

Yes. PTR Industries makes roller-delayed rifles, pistols, a 12 gauge and VENT suppressors in Aynor, South Carolina, and we carry its current 9SDM-B, The Jack SBS and VENT suppressors.

Where are PTR guns made?

In Aynor, South Carolina. PTR makes every part in the USA.

Is PTR the same as HK?

No. PTR Industries makes its firearms in Aynor, South Carolina. Heckler & Koch doesn't make them. PTR builds roller-delayed blowback designs derived from HK-pattern platforms, and many models work with HK-pattern parts.

Is the PTR 9 an MP5 clone?

Yes. The PTR 9 series is PTR's US-made MP5 clone. It uses the same roller-delayed blowback system and MP5-pattern magazines, and many models work with HK-pattern furniture, optics mounts, trigger housings and accessories (check fit by model).

What is roller-delayed blowback?

The operating system used in HK's G3 and MP5. Two rollers in the bolt head rest against the barrel extension and a wedge called the locking piece. When the gun fires, the rollers have to be pushed inward before the bolt can move back, which holds the breech closed until pressure drops.

Does the PTR 9SDM-B use MP5 magazines?

Yes. PTR 9 series firearms use MP5-pattern magazines, and the 9SDM-B comes with two 30-round steel magazines.

What is the PTR 9SDM-B?

A factory suppressed 9mm SBR: a PTR 9 series host with a 6 in. ported barrel, the USDA pre-suppressor and the VENT SDM suppressor installed, plus a CS1 collapsible stock. It's 22.75 in. collapsed and 7.12 lb unloaded.

How quiet is the PTR 9SDM-B?

It's the quietest SD-style MP5 variant we've ever heard. The ported barrel brings standard 9mm to subsonic speed, the USDA pre-suppressor captures and slows the ported gas, and the VENT SDM, built only for this gun with PTR's PIP technology, handles the rest.

Does the 9SDM-B need subsonic ammo?

No. The ported barrel bleeds gas before the bullet exits and brings supersonic 9mm down to subsonic velocity, so standard ammo works.

What do PIP and DLC mean on the VENT SDM?

PIP is Purposely Induced Porosity: the VENT SDM is 3D printed in titanium with regions of porous metal lattice that gas flows through and leaks forward in stages, which gives high sound reduction with low back pressure. DLC is diamond-like carbon, a thin, hard coating that resists wear and adds corrosion protection. It's the protective finish over the titanium.

How many tax stamps do I need for the 9SDM-B?

Three. The 9SDM-B is three NFA items: the SBR, the USDA (Universal SD Adapter) and the VENT SDM suppressor. Each one needs an approved ATF Form 4. The federal tax on all three has been $0 since January 1, 2026.

Why does the 9SDM-B have two suppressor serial numbers?

Because it has two suppressors. The USDA captures and slows ported gas before it reaches the VENT SDM, and federal law defines any device that diminishes a firearm's report as a suppressor (18 U.S.C. 921(a)(25)). So the USDA and the VENT SDM are each serialized and registered as a suppressor.

What's the difference between the PTR 9SDM-A and 9SDM-B?

The suppressor. The 9SDM-B comes with the VENT SDM, built for this system; the 9SDM-A comes with the VENT 2, PTR's general-purpose 9mm suppressor.

Can I put a different suppressor on the 9SDM-B?

Yes. The USDA is threaded for both HUB Alpha (1.125x28) and HUB Bravo (1.375x24) suppressors, and the barrel is 3-lug and threaded 1/2x28. The USDA stays on the gun as its own registered suppressor, and any other suppressor you add needs its own approved Form 4.

What is PTR The Jack?

A compact 12 gauge with a 7.25 in. barrel, 2+1 capacity and Hogue furniture. We carry the SBS (short-barreled shotgun) version, which has a stock and is about 25 in. overall. PTR also makes an AOW version.

Is The Jack an SBS or an AOW?

PTR makes both. The Jack SBS has a fixed stock and is a short-barreled shotgun; The Jack AOW is registered as an Any Other Weapon. We carry the SBS.

What ammo does The Jack take?

12 gauge, 2-3/4 and 3 in. shells, with a 2+1 capacity.

What warranty do PTR firearms have?

A Limited Lifetime Warranty for the original purchaser, covering defects in materials and workmanship. It has to be bought from an authorized dealer, registered with PTR and maintained according to the owner's manual.

Do I pay a tax stamp on a PTR SBR or SBS?

No. As of January 1, 2026, the federal tax on SBRs, SBSs and suppressors is $0. You still need an approved ATF Form 4 for each NFA item (three for the 9SDM-B, one for The Jack SBS), and we handle that paperwork in-house.
