SureFire Suppressor Buying Guide

How to pick between the SureFire SOCOM556-RC4, RC2, MINI4, MINI2 and SB2, the SOCOM762 cans, the SOCOM300-SPS and the SOCOM338-Ti: specs, barrel lengths, PEW Science results, the right muzzle device, and how SureFire compares.

Where to start

How to Choose a SureFire Suppressor

Every SureFire SOCOM suppressor uses the same Fast-Attach mount, so the real decision is caliber and barrel length. Here's how we walk people through it at the counter:

5.56 carbine or SBR, 10.3 in. and up

SOCOM556-RC4

SureFire's newest full-size 5.56 can: all Inconel, 6.3 in., 17 oz, redesigned for lower back pressure and flash.

5.56 under 10 in.

SOCOM556-SB2

Built for barrels of 10 in. or less, with a larger bore for short-barrel bullet yaw.

Shortest 5.56

SOCOM556-MINI4 or SOCOM556-MINI2

5.5 in. and 5 in. The MINI4 (RC4 Mini) works on 10.3 in. barrels; the MINI2 is optimized for 14.5 in. and up.

.308 and .300 Win Mag

SOCOM762-RC2

8.4 in. Inconel and stainless, full-auto durable, very low back pressure for its size.

Subsonic 300 Blackout

SOCOM300-SPS

SureFire's purpose-built 300 BLK can, optimized for barrels 10 in. and shorter.

Light .30 cal or .338

SOCOM762-Ti2 or SOCOM338-Ti

Titanium versions for bolt guns: 11 oz for the 762-Ti2 and 22 oz for the 338-Ti.

One thing to know up front: SureFire builds the SOCOM line for military and police guns, so it leans toward flash suppression, durability, low back pressure and a mount that stays put on a full-auto carbine. If the only thing you care about is the quietest 5.56 can on a bench, we'll point you elsewhere (see comparisons). If you want a can that lives on a duty rifle, this is the family.

The brand

Why SureFire

  • Fast-Attach mounting. The can slides over a SureFire SOCOM muzzle device and locks on without tools. The same flash hider, brake or WARCOMP fits every SOCOM suppressor in that caliber family, so one set of muzzle devices covers several guns.
  • Flash suppression. SureFire's Total Signature Reduction design targets first-round flash. The RC2 cuts visible flash up to 99.3 percent over a bare muzzle, and the fourth-generation RC4 and MINI4 were redesigned around flash.
  • Repeatable zero. The RC2 and 762-RC2 are test fired for a repeatable sub-MOA point of impact shift, even after taking the can on and off.
  • Built for full-auto. High-temperature alloy (Inconel) and stainless construction, with the RC4 and MINI4 in all Inconel.
  • Lower back pressure. Internal venting reduces back pressure, cyclic rate and gas to the face. PEW Science found the 762-RC2's back pressure significantly reduced compared with similar-size cans (SSS.6.26).
  • Published sound data. SureFire lists dB at the shooter's ear by barrel length and ammo for most models, so you can compare apples to apples within the line.

Several SOCOM models carry military stock numbers (NSNs), including the SOCOM556-SB2 and SOCOM762-RC2.

SureFire SOCOM556-RC4

The RC4 is SureFire's fourth-generation full-size 5.56 can, and the one we'd start most AR owners on today.

Caliber: 5.56 NATO  |  Length: 6.3 in. (adds 3.8 in.)  |  Weight: 17 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: Inconel, Cerakote  |  Barrel: Optimized for 10.3 in. and up  |  Sound: 139 dB at the ear, 10.3 in., M855

SureFire redesigned the internals for the RC4 around flash and gas flow, with 60 percent lower back pressure. Less back pressure means less gas in your face and less wear on a short carbine.

It's backward compatible with every SOCOM Fast-Attach muzzle device, so if you already run SureFire flash hiders, they work. SureFire optimizes it for the SF3P 3-prong, FH556RC and WARCOMP open-tine hiders.

If it's out of stock, sign up for the back-in-stock email on its product page, or call us at 512-879-1068 to pre-order one. We'll guarantee you one from the next shipment.

SureFire SOCOM556-RC2

The RC2 is the long-running SOCOM full-size 5.56, and it's still in SureFire's lineup next to the RC4.

Caliber: 5.56 NATO  |  Length: 6.4 in. (adds 3.8 in.)  |  Weight: 17 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: High-temp alloy and stainless, DLC and Cerakote  |  Barrel: 10 in. minimum  |  Sound: 137.7 dB at 10.3 in.; 136.4 at 14.5 in.; 134.7 at 16 in. (M855)

It cuts visible flash up to 99.3 percent over a bare muzzle and holds a repeatable sub-MOA point of impact shift. The RC2 was designed around the 10.3 in. MK18, and that's where it does its best work.

If you're choosing between the two today, the RC4 is the newer design with less back pressure. The RC2 is the one with years of service behind it.

Test results and reviews

PEW Science: 35.7 composite on a 10.3 in. MK18 with XM193 and the SOCOM 3-prong flash hider (SSS.6.52). Also 35.7 on a 14.5 in. M4A1 (muzzle 35.0, ear 25.4; SSS.6.128). PEW found its performance doesn't climb much on the longer barrel, which fits its MK18-first design.

SureFire SOCOM556-MINI4

The MINI4, which a lot of people search as the RC4 Mini, is the compact fourth-generation can. It's half an inch longer than the MINI2 but works on 10.3 in. barrels.

Caliber: 5.56 NATO  |  Length: 5.5 in. (adds 3 in.)  |  Weight: 15 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: Inconel, Cerakote  |  Barrel: Flash optimized for 10.3 in. and up  |  Sound: 142 dB at the ear, 10.3 in., M855

Same story as the RC4: all Inconel, the same redesigned flow, and backward compatible with SOCOM muzzle devices. It's 3 dB louder at the ear than the RC4 on the same 10.3 in. barrel, which is the trade for being 0.8 in. shorter.

If it's out of stock, sign up for the back-in-stock email on its product page, or call us at 512-879-1068 to pre-order one. We'll guarantee you one from the next shipment.

Shop the SureFire SOCOM556-MINI4 →

SureFire SOCOM556-MINI2

The MINI2 (RC2 Mini) is the shortest SOCOM 5.56 can at 5 inches and adds just 2.5 inches to the rifle.

Caliber: 5.56 NATO  |  Length: 5 in. (adds 2.5 in.)  |  Weight: 15 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: High-temp alloy and stainless, Ionbond and Cerakote  |  Barrel: Optimized for 14.5 in. and up  |  Sound: 140 dB at 10.3 in.; 137 at 14.5 and 16 in. (M855)

This is the one for a 14.5 or 16 in. carbine where you want the shortest overall length. On a 10.3 in. gun, the MINI4 or RC4 is the better pick.

It ships with a FirstSpear MOLLE pouch and a cleaning brush.

Test results and reviews

PEW Science: 29.2 composite on a 14.5 in. M4A1 with XM193 and the SOCOM 3-prong (SSS.6.144). PEW found lower ejection port blast than the RC2 and called its suppression competitive for its size.

SureFire SOCOM556-SB2

The SB2 is SureFire's 5.56 can for short-barreled rifles under 10 inches.

Caliber: 5.56 NATO  |  Length: 6.4 in. (adds 3.8 in.)  |  Weight: 17 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: High-temp alloy and stainless, Ionbond and Cerakote  |  Barrel: Built for 10 in. or less  |  Sound: 142 dB at 9 in.; 140 at 10.3 in.; 137 at 11 in.; 136 at 14.5 and 16 in. (M855)

It's based on the RC2 with a larger bore, which lowers the chance of a baffle strike from bullets that aren't fully stable out of a very short barrel, plus very low back pressure for less gas to the face on a short gun.

It's the can to buy for an 8 to 10 in. SBR. It also runs on longer barrels, as the sound numbers show.

SureFire SOCOM762-RC2

The 762-RC2 is SureFire's full-size .30 cal, rated from .308 through .300 Win Mag.

Caliber: 7.62 NATO/.308, .300 Win Mag  |  Length: 8.4 in. (adds 5.9 in.)  |  Weight: 21 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: Inconel and stainless, DLC and Cerakote  |  Sound: 136 dB at 16 in.; 134 at 25 in. (M118 LR)

This is SureFire's most versatile rifle can. Vented baffles keep back pressure down, it's built for full-auto, and it holds a repeatable sub-MOA point of impact shift. On a .308 gas gun, that low back pressure is what you'll notice.

It'll go on a 5.56 in a pinch, but it's over-bored for it. PEW Science found it much less effective on a 10.3 in. MK18 than the 556-RC2 (SSS.6.73), so for a 5.56 get a SOCOM556.

Test results and reviews

PEW Science: 38.4 composite on a 20 in. Savage 10 .308 with the SOCOM 3-prong (SSS.6.26), with significantly reduced back pressure compared with similar-size cans. 44.0 on subsonic 300 BLK from an 8 in. Q mini FIX (SSS.6.46).

Shop the SureFire SOCOM762-RC2 →

SureFire SOCOM762-MINI2

The 762-MINI2 is the short .30 cal: 2 inches shorter and 4 ounces lighter than the 762-RC2.

Caliber: 7.62 NATO/.308  |  Length: 6.4 in. (adds 3.8 in.)  |  Weight: 17 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: High-temp alloy and stainless  |  Barrel: Optimized for 16 in. and up  |  Sound: 137 dB at 16.3 in. (122 gr); 141 at 16 in. and 137 at 25 in. (M118 LR)

Pick it when length matters more than sound on a 16 in. or longer .308. It's quieter on the long barrel than the short one, as SureFire's own numbers show.

The trade is real: PEW Science rated it 25.1 on a 20 in. .308, against 38.4 for the 762-RC2 on the same rifle (SSS.6.106). If you have the room, the RC2 is the better .308 can.

SureFire SOCOM762-Ti2

The Ti2 is the titanium .30 cal for bolt guns and hunting rifles, at 11 ounces.

Caliber: 7.62 NATO/.308  |  Length: 7.9 in. (adds 5.4 in.)  |  Weight: 11 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: Titanium, DLC and Cerakote  |  Sound: 132.4 dB at 25 in. (M118 LR); 134.3 at 22 in. (6.5 Creedmoor 147 gr ELD)

It's 10 ounces lighter than the 762-RC2. Choose it for a bolt gun you carry; for a gas gun or full-auto use, the 762-RC2 is the one.

SureFire SOCOM338-Ti

The 338-Ti is SureFire's titanium suppressor for .338 rifles.

Caliber: .338  |  Length: 9.9 in. (adds 6.9 in.)  |  Weight: 22 oz  |  Diameter: 2 in.  |  Material: Titanium, DLC and Cerakote  |  Mount: Fast-Attach, pairs with the SOCOM338 muzzle brake  |  Sound: 136 dB at 20 in. (250 gr); 134 at 31 in. (285 gr)

It mounts to the SureFire SOCOM338 muzzle brake.

300 Blackout

SureFire SOCOM300-SPS

SureFire SOCOM300-SPS

The 300-SPS is SureFire's subsonic 300 Blackout suppressor, optimized for 300 BLK barrels 10 inches and shorter.

Caliber: 7.62 NATO/.308, 300 BLK  |  Length: 7.9 in. (adds 5.4 in.)  |  Weight: 20 oz  |  Diameter: 1.5 in.  |  Material: High-temp alloy and stainless, Ionbond and Cerakote  |  Sound: 126 dB at 5.5 in. (220 gr subsonic); 133 at 5.5 in. (125 gr); 132 at 25 in. (M118 LR)

Unlike the rest of the SOCOM line, the SPS is built to trap more gas for subsonic sound reduction, so it runs more back pressure than the 762-RC2. On a short 300 BLK gas gun, plan on tuning the gas or running an adjustable gas block if gas to the face bothers you.

It also has an oversized bore to cut the chance of baffle strikes from unstable bullets out of very short barrels, and it cuts visible flash up to 99.5 percent.

Test results and reviews

PEW Science: 63.1 composite on an 8 in. Q mini FIX with 190 gr subsonic, no wipes (SSS.6.57), against 44.0 for the 762-RC2 on the same gun (SSS.6.46). PEW found the SPS beat a wiped Energetic Armament VOX S at both muzzle and ear.

Mounts and accessories

SureFire Muzzle Devices

SureFire suppressors don't include a muzzle device. Pick one SOCOM device per rifle and the can moves between them:

  • SOCOM 3-prong flash hider (SF3P): our default recommendation for suppressed use. Over 99 percent flash reduction and labyrinth seals that limit carbon. 1/2x28, 5/8x24, M14x1, M15x1 and 3/4x24.
  • SOCOM Muzzle Brake: for recoil and muzzle rise when the can is off. 1/2x28, 5/8x24, M18x1 and M18x1.5. Ships with a shim kit.
  • WARCOMP: flash hider and compensator in one. Good unsuppressed, but its ports let gas leak at the mount when the can is on. PEW Science measured lower ratings with the WARCOMP than the 3-prong on the RC2, MINI2 and 762-RC2 (SSS.6.52, SSS.6.144, SSS.6.26).
  • Warden: a blast regulator that fits over SOCOM devices to push concussion forward when you're shooting without a suppressor.
  • Running HUB suppressors too? The B&T 5.56 Titanium HUB Adapter for SureFire and B&T 7.62 Titanium HUB Adapter for SureFire lock onto SureFire SOCOM devices and accept any HUB (1.375x24) suppressor, so one set of SureFire devices works with both.

Check your barrel thread before ordering; our thread pitch chart covers the common ones.

How SureFire Compares

5.56 on the same MK18

PEW Science tests 5.56 cans on the same 10.3 in. MK18 with XM193, so these numbers line up. Higher is quieter.

SuppressorPEW Science compositeReport
PTR VENT 342.6SSS.6.135
PTR VENT Spiritus 5.56i37.5SSS.6.175
SureFire SOCOM556-RC235.7 (3-prong)SSS.6.52
CAT WB35.3SSS.6.129

The RC2 sits right with the CAT WB and behind the PTR VENT 3 and VENT Spiritus on sound. Where SureFire pulls ahead is the rest of the package: flash, the Fast-Attach mount, zero repeatability and a full-auto rating built for duty use. PEW Science hasn't published the RC4 or MINI4 yet. In PEW Science's RC2 vs. RC3 study, the newer, higher-flow design kept about the same protection at the shooter's ear with less back pressure (SSS.6.152).

Inside the SureFire line

  • RC4 vs. RC2: same size and weight. The RC4 is all Inconel with lower back pressure and better flash; the RC2 is the proven version.
  • MINI4 vs. MINI2: the MINI4 is half an inch longer and works on 10.3 in. barrels; the MINI2 is shorter and wants 14.5 in. or more.
  • SB2 vs. RC2: same size. The SB2 has the bigger bore for barrels under 10 in.; the RC2 needs 10 in. or more.
  • 762-RC2 vs. 762-MINI2: 2 in. and 4 oz apart, and 38.4 vs. 25.1 on PEW Science's .308. Take the RC2 unless length is the deciding factor.
  • 300-SPS vs. 762-RC2 on 300 BLK: 63.1 vs. 44.0 on subsonic. The SPS for a dedicated 300 BLK; the 762-RC2 if the same can also goes on a .308.

FAQ

SureFire FAQ

What's the difference between the SureFire RC4 and RC2?

They're the same size: about 6.3 to 6.4 in. and 17 oz. The SOCOM556-RC4 is the fourth-generation design in all Inconel, redesigned for lower back pressure (60 percent lower) and flash suppression. The RC2 is the earlier, proven model and is still in SureFire's lineup.

Is the SureFire RC2 discontinued?

No. SureFire still lists the SOCOM556-RC2 alongside the newer RC4.

What happened to the SureFire RC3?

SureFire's current lineup lists the RC4 and RC2 as its full-size 5.56 cans; the RC3 isn't on SureFire's site. The RC4 uses the same SOCOM muzzle devices.

How much does the SureFire RC2 weigh, and how long is it?

17 oz, 6.4 in. long, 1.5 in. in diameter, and it adds 3.8 in. to the rifle.

How long is the RC4, and what does it weigh?

6.3 in. long, adds 3.8 in., 17 oz, 1.5 in. diameter.

What's the SureFire RC4 Mini?

That's the SOCOM556-MINI4: 5.5 in. long, adds 3 in., 15 oz, all Inconel, and works on 10.3 in. and longer barrels.

SureFire MINI2 vs. MINI4: which should I get?

The MINI2 is 5 in. and optimized for 14.5 in. and longer barrels. The MINI4 is 5.5 in. and works on 10.3 in. barrels with lower back pressure. For a short carbine, the MINI4; for a 14.5 or 16 in. rifle where length matters most, the MINI2.

How long is the RC2 Mini and what does it weigh?

The SOCOM556-MINI2 is 5 in. long, adds 2.5 in. to the rifle, and weighs 15 oz.

SureFire SB2 vs. RC2: what's the difference?

Same length and weight. The SB2 has a larger bore and is built for 5.56 barrels under 10 in.; the RC2 needs a 10 in. or longer barrel.

Which SureFire suppressor is best for 300 Blackout?

The SOCOM300-SPS. It's built for subsonic 300 BLK on barrels 10 in. and shorter and scored 63.1 on PEW Science's subsonic test (SSS.6.57). The 762-RC2 also handles 300 BLK and .308 if you want one can for both.

Can I use a SureFire 762-RC2 on a 5.56?

Yes, but it's over-bored for 5.56 and PEW Science found it much less effective on a 10.3 in. MK18 than the 556-RC2. Get a SOCOM556 can for a 5.56.

Which muzzle device is best with a SureFire suppressor?

The SOCOM 3-prong flash hider (SF3P). PEW Science measured better results with it than with the WARCOMP on the RC2, MINI2 and 762-RC2, because the WARCOMP's ports leak gas at the mount.

Do SureFire suppressors come with a muzzle device?

No. You'll need a SureFire SOCOM flash hider, muzzle brake or WARCOMP for each rifle. Several models ship with a FirstSpear pouch and a cleaning brush.

Can I put a HUB suppressor on SureFire muzzle devices?

Yes, with the B&T Titanium HUB Adapter for SureFire (5.56 or 7.62). It locks onto SureFire SOCOM devices and takes any HUB (1.375x24) suppressor.

Is the SureFire FA762SS still made?

SureFire's current site doesn't list the FA762SS. Its current .30 cal suppressors are the SOCOM762-RC2, SOCOM762-MINI2 and SOCOM762-Ti2.

Are SureFire suppressors full-auto rated?

The SOCOM line is built for full-auto use with high-temperature alloy and stainless or all-Inconel construction. Check each model's barrel length guidance.

What suppressor does SOCOM use?

SureFire's SOCOM line is built for military and law enforcement use, and several models carry military stock numbers (NSNs), including the SOCOM556-SB2 and SOCOM762-RC2.

Do I still need a tax stamp for a SureFire suppressor?

The NFA tax on suppressors has been $0 since January 1, 2026, but you still need an approved ATF Form 4. We file it and ship the suppressor to your home after approval.
