The Daniel Defense DD4 RIII S is a 5.56mm NATO AR15 style short barrel rifle in FDE, built around a free-floating, 11.5" cold hammer forged Government profile barrel and a 10.5" RIS III M-LOK rail. It weighs 5.92 lbs and measures 27.875" to 31.25" overall with the muzzle device. Daniel Defense designed the DD4 RIII S to deliver maneuverability, reliability, accuracy, and terminal ballistics across a wide variety of ammunition.

The fully ambidextrous lower receiver gives both left- and right-handed shooters access to the bolt catch, safety selector, and magazine release without moving or removing their dominant hand from the grip. The GRIP-N-RIP Charging Handle is fully ambidextrous as well, and a carbine-length gas system provides smooth, reliable cycling under harsh conditions while reducing perceived recoil.

Daniel Defense modeled the RIS III rail after the RIS II two-piece handguard developed for SOCOM, using M-LOK attachment for lighter weight. Its patented 6-bolt Bolt-Up System free floats the barrel, the lower section can be removed without affecting structural integrity, and flush integral QD points on each side near the receiver eliminate the need for an aftermarket QD mount. The DD4 RIII S comes with the Daniel Defense Buttstock and Pistol Grip, and sights are sold separately. At the muzzle, the Daniel Defense Flash Suppressor threads onto a standard 1/2x28 barrel thread and can be swapped for a direct thread mount or suppressor-compatible muzzle device.

CAPITOL ARMORY'S OPINION

The DD4 RIII S sits a step longer than the MK18 RIII, pairing the same fully ambidextrous lower and RIS III rail design with an 11.5" barrel. If you want the ambi controls and the removable lower rail section but a little more barrel to work with, this is a strong middle ground in Daniel Defense's SBR lineup.
