YHM R9 9MM SUPPRESSOR - PISTOL CALIBER CARBINE AND SUBMACHINE GUN SILENCER, 9MM THROUGH .308 WINCHESTER
The Yankee Hill Machine R9 is a 9mm suppressor built for pistol caliber carbines and submachine guns. The fully welded, tubeless 17-4 PH stainless steel construction handles high-volume 9mm fire and is full-auto rated. At 5.2 inches long and 10.7 ounces, the R9 keeps compact firearms maneuverable. The tubeless design removes the inner tube found in traditional suppressors, increasing internal volume within the same outer dimensions. More volume means more gas containment and quieter performance. YHM rates the R9 at 123 dB on 9mm and 142 dB on .308 Winchester (20-inch barrel).
Beyond 9mm, YHM built the R9 to handle rifle calibers including .300 Blackout, .308 Winchester, 5.56 NATO, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, 6.8 SPC, and 350 Legend. Rifle caliber use requires a minimum 16-inch barrel, except 300 Blackout at 7.5 inches. The R9 can also suppress 9mm handguns with a Nielsen Booster Assembly and compatible piston.
The R9 uses a 1-3/8"x24 HUB mounting interface. This opens up a wide range of attachment options: direct thread adapters, YHM Kurz QD, YHM SRX, 3-lug mounts, Dead Air KeyMo, Q Plan B, SilencerCo ASR, and others. Model: YHM-2155-28
CAPITOL ARMORY'S OPINION
The YHM R9 is best suited for submachine guns and pistol-caliber carbines. It's at home on a CZ Scorpion, MP5, SP5, MPX, APC9, Stribog, or similar 9mm platform. With a booster housing and piston, it also works on Browning-style handguns. Where the R9 sets itself apart from dedicated 9mm suppressors is rifle caliber capability. The .308 and 5.56 ratings (with 16-inch minimum barrels) mean it can pull double duty on a bolt gun or full-length AR. The 300 Blackout rating at 7.5 inches makes it functional on short-barreled 300 BLK hosts as well. If your primary use is a 9mm PCC or subgun and you want one suppressor that can move across platforms, the R9 handles the job at a price point that's hard to argue with.

Why is the tubeless design important?
Traditional suppressors sandwich a series of baffles inside a separate outer tube. The tube takes up space, adds weight, and limits how much internal volume you can pack into a given outer diameter. The R9 eliminates the tube entirely. The eight baffles are machined from 17-4 PH stainless steel and fully welded together, so the baffle stack itself is the structure. No tube means more internal volume within the same exterior dimensions. More volume means more space for expanding gas to cool and slow down before it exits, which translates directly to better sound reduction. The tradeoff is that the R9 is not user-serviceable or disassemblable; the baffles are permanently welded. That's a deliberate design choice. The fully welded construction is what makes the R9 so robust under hard use and high round counts.
What calibers are best with the R9?
The R9's primary purpose is 9mm, and that's where it performs best. YHM rates it at 124 dB on 9mm, which is outstanding for a can this compact. It's equally at home across pistol calibers from .17 HMR up through 9mm, including .380, making it one of the more versatile small-bore options on the market. Where the R9 distinguishes itself from a standard 9mm suppressor is its rifle caliber capability. With the appropriate host and minimum barrel lengths observed, the R9 handles .300 Blackout (7.5" minimum barrel), as well as 5.56 NATO, .308 Winchester, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, 6.8 SPC, and 350 Legend (all requiring a 16" minimum barrel). On .308 with a 20" barrel, it rates at 142 dB. For a 9mm suppressor to also cover your bolt gun or full-length AR makes for a compelling value proposition, though if your primary use case is dedicated rifle suppression, a purpose-built rifle can will outperform the R9 in that role. As a multi-role tool with 9mm at the center, it's hard to beat.
Are there any barrel length restrictions?
Yes, and they matter. For 9mm pistol and PCC use there are no minimum barrel length restrictions. The R9 was designed for that application. For rifle calibers, YHM specifies a 7.5" minimum for .300 Blackout, and a 16" minimum for everything else: 5.56 NATO, .308 Winchester, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, 6.8 SPC, and 350 Legend. Running a suppressor on a barrel shorter than rated can result in excessive back pressure, increased wear, and in worst cases, damage to the suppressor. If you're planning to run the R9 on a rifle caliber host, verify your barrel length before ordering and confirm your gas system is tuned appropriately for suppressed fire.
What do I need to put it on a pistol?
The R9 ships with a 1/2x28 direct thread HUB adapter, which works fine for fixed-barrel hosts and PCCs out of the box. For a standard tilting-barrel semi-auto pistol you'll also need the YHM Nielsen Booster Assembly and a separate YHM Nielsen Piston in the correct thread pitch for your barrel. The reason is mechanical: tilting-barrel pistols rely on the barrel moving rearward to unlock the action and cycle the slide. A suppressor clamped rigidly to the barrel adds mass that fights that movement. The booster assembly, a spring-loaded Nielsen device, threads into the R9's HUB rear socket and decouples the suppressor's weight from the slide's cycling motion, letting the action function normally. Pistons are available in the most common thread pitches for 9mm and .45 ACP hosts, and the booster housing also accepts SilencerCoand Rugged if you already have them. Plan for the booster and piston as add-on purchases when budgeting for pistol use.
What accessories can be used to attach it to a rifle?
The R9's 1-3/8"x24 HUB rear threading opens up a wide ecosystem of mounting options beyond the included direct thread adapter. For quick-detach on a rifle, the YHM Phantom QD Adapter pairs with YHM's line of Phantom QD flash hiders and muzzle brakes for fast, tool-free attachment and removal. For a more compact QD profile, the YHM Kurz QD Adapter trims the system down by over half an inch compared to the standard Phantom hardware. For subguns and PCCs with a 3-lug muzzle adapter, the YHM HD 3-Lug HUB Adapter is the recommended option. It's full-auto rated and uses a tighter, more concentric interface than traditional spring-style 3-lug designs, which reduces the chance of the can walking off during sustained fire. Because the R9 uses the industry-standard HUB thread pitch, it also accepts third-party mounts including Dead Air KeyMo, Q Plan B, and SilencerCo ASR if you already run those muzzle devices on your rifles.
Is a multi-caliber suppressor better than a dedicated option?
It depends on how you shoot and how many tax stamps you're willing to accumulate. A dedicated 9mm suppressor, something like the Rugged Obsidian 9, is optimized specifically for that caliber and may eke out a few more dB of reduction in the role it was designed for. If 9mm hosts are all you run, a dedicated can probably makes the most sense. The R9's value proposition is versatility under one tax stamp. If you own a 9mm PCC, a suppressor-ready pistol, a .300 BLK SBR, and a bolt-action rifle in .308, the R9 can cover all four with the right mounting hardware. For shooters building out a suppressed collection and looking to cover multiple platforms efficiently without buying a separate can for every host, a capable multi-caliber suppressor like the R9 is a smart way to maximize what one stamp gets you.
