RUGGED OBSIDIAN 9 - MODULAR 9MM SUPPRESSOR FOR PISTOLS AND PISTOL-CALIBER CARBINES

The Rugged Obsidian 9 is a full-featured modular 9mm suppressor built for shooters who want one can that does everything. The ADAPT system lets you run it in full-length configuration at 7.8" and 12.7 oz for maximum sound reduction, or pull the ADAPT module and run it short at 4.85" and 8.7 oz when size and weight matter more. At 1.37" in diameter, it clears most suppressor-height pistol sights right out of the box, making it a practical choice for everyday carry hosts as well as pistol-caliber carbines and SBRs. The baffles are machined from 17-4 stainless steel with a keyed design that ensures proper alignment and minimizes carbon lockup. The tube is hard coat anodized aluminum, the mount is 17-4 stainless steel, and the whole package is finished in high-temperature Cerakote.

The Obsidian 9 ships with a 1/2x28 non-slotted piston. The non-slotted design creates a full circumference gas seal, reducing blowback compared to slotted pistons. Rugged placed the serial number engraving on the thickest part of the mount, so the serialized section is protected and easier to service or replace. This suppressor is Belt Fed Rated for pistol calibers up to 9mm, rated for subsonic 300 Blackout and 9x39 on barrels 8 inches or longer, and rated for 350 Legend on barrels 16 inches or longer. The Obsidian 9 is fully compatible with Obsidian 45 accessories and SilencerCo pistol suppressor pistons.

CAPITOL ARMORY'S OPINION

The Obsidian 9 is one of the best all-around 9mm suppressors on the market. The ADAPT modular system is the answer to a real problem.  Shooters don't always want the same can for their bedside pistol and their PCC. Pull the module and you have a compact, lightweight suppressor for a nightstand pistol. Leave it on and you get full-length sound reduction for a PCC or subgun.  The 17-4 stainless baffle stack with keyed alignment is a smart design that keeps carbon lockup manageable and makes cleaning straightforward. Belt Fed Rated for 9mm, rated for subsonic 300 Blackout and 9x39 on barrels 8 inches or longer, and rated for 350 Legend on a 16-inch barrel adds a substantial amount of versatility for a pistol-caliber can. The 1.37" diameter clears most suppressor-height sights, which can be nice but isn't truly necessary. Backed by Rugged's unconditional lifetime warranty, the Obsidian 9 is a confident buy.

How much does the Obsidian 9 reduce sound?

Rugged's testing places the Obsidian 9 at 120.9 dB at the shooter's ear in full-length configuration. In short configuration (ADAPT module removed), suppression comes in around 135.5 dB. For reference, an unsuppressed 9mm pistol typically registers around 160 dB, well into the range of immediate hearing damage. In both configurations, the Obsidian 9 comfortably stays under the 140 dB threshold that audiologists consider the threshold for acute hearing risk. Third-party testing by PEW Science corroborates Rugged's numbers and places the Obsidian 9 among the highest-performing 9mm suppressors tested in its class.

Why should I pick the Obsidian 9 over the Obsidian 45?

If 9mm is your primary caliber, the Obsidian 9 is the better-optimized tool. It's purpose-built for 9mm, which means better sound reduction on 9mm hosts versus the Obsidian 45 running the same ammo. It also gets meaningfully shorter and lighter in the short "K" configuration. The Obsidian 9 drops to 4.85" and 8.7 oz when you pull the ADAPT module, while the Obsidian 45 can't get quite as compact. The Obsidian 45 makes more sense if you also shoot .45 ACP or want one that covers a broader caliber range. The good news is that all mounting accessories (pistons , fixed barrel spacers , fixed barrel mounts , 3-lug mounts , and front caps ) are cross-compatible between both suppressors, so you're not starting from scratch on the accessory side if you ever add the other to your collection.

How does the Obsidian 9 compare to the Rugged Sub 9?

These two serve distinctly different use cases within the same caliber. The Sub 9 was engineered from the ground up specifically for pistol caliber carbines, subguns, and SMG-style platforms. It uses a coaxial chamber design tuned for PCC gas volumes, runs at 1.73" diameter (notably wider than the Obsidian 9's 1.37"), and ships with Rugged's Universal 3-Lug Mount as standard. There's no piston-booster system because fixed-barrel use is the intended application. The Obsidian 9, by contrast, is the more versatile option. It works equally well on pistols and PCCs, offers two length configurations under a single tax stamp, and at 1.37" diameter, stays compatible with standard pistol sights for handgun use. If your primary platform is an MP5, AR9, or similar subgun and you're prioritizing maximum suppression for that application, the Sub 9 is the more specialized tool. If you want one can that covers your pistol on the nightstand and your PCC in the safe, the Obsidian 9 handles both without compromise.

What's the difference between a piston, fixed barrel mount, and fixed barrel spacer?

This comes down to how your host firearm's barrel is configured. A piston (also called a "Nielsen device" or booster) is required for semi-automatic pistols. Pistol slides reciprocate under recoil, and without a spring-loaded piston to allow the suppressor to stay momentarily stationary, the added weight of the suppressor out front can cause cycling issues. The Obsidian 9 ships with a 1/2x28 non-slotted piston, which creates a full-circumference gas seal and reduces blowback compared to slotted designs. Pistons are available in multiple thread pitches to match your host pistol's muzzle threads. The Obsidian 9 pistons are cross-compatible with SilencerCo-threaded hosts as well, aside from the Osprey series. A fixed barrel spacer is used when your host has a non-reciprocating barrel found on PCCs, subguns, and AR-platform pistol-caliber builds. Because the barrel doesn't move, there's nothing for a booster to compress against. The spacer replaces the piston assembly and provides a solid, stable mount point. A fixed barrel mount (also called a direct thread fixed mount) is an alternative attachment method for fixed-barrel hosts that threads directly onto the muzzle without any booster mechanism, providing a rock-solid, zero-movement attachment for carbine applications. How do I clean the Obsidian 9?

One of the Obsidian 9's practical advantages is that it's fully user-serviceable. The keyed baffle stack disassembles without special tools beyond what Rugged includes, and the baffles can be dropped into an ultrasonic cleaner with a 50/50 mix of Purple Power and water for about an hour, then rinsed and dried. The piston and spring get the same treatment. The tube, ADAPT module body, front cap, and spring retainer should not go in an ultrasonic cleaner. Use a non-ammonia cleaner and a brush for those. When you reassemble, put a thin coat of white lithium grease on the outside of the piston. After reinstalling on the host, check that the can is fully threaded every 30 rounds until you've confirmed it's staying put. Cleaning frequency depends on what you're shooting. Lead and rimfire foul faster than jacketed 9mm, but the takedown process is straightforward enough that it won't discourage regular maintenance.

Does a 3-Lug mount work on pistols?

No. 3-lug is primarily a subgun and PCC mounting solution. The 3-lug interface was originally developed for the HK MP5 family and similar platforms, where a Nielsen device isn't needed and quick attachment/detachment is the priority. On a reciprocating-barrel pistol, you'd still need a booster assembly for proper function. The Obsidian 9 3-Lug Mount is a solid option if you're running an MP5-style host, an AR9, or another fixed-barrel platform with a 3-lug adapter already installed. If you're mounting the Obsidian 9 on a standard pistol, you'll want the appropriate piston for your thread pitch instead.
