ATF FORM 4 TAX STAMP - $0 - NFA TRANSFER FILING FOR SUPPRESSORS, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs

The federal transfer tax on suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs has been $0 since January 1, 2026, under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Machine guns and destructive devices still carry the $200 tax. The stamp costs nothing. This $0 line item covers your Form 4 filing: Capitol Armory prepares and submits your ATF Form 4, tracks it through approval, and completes the transfer by shipping it to your door. It's added by default to every NFA item you purchase on our site, and you can remove it.

The tax is gone. The paperwork isn't, and that's where transfers can stall. We file tens of thousands of NFA forms a year with a team that does this every day. There's no handoff to a third party and no local shop handling the Form 4 as an occasional service. We own our FFL network outright, so where the law allows it, your approved suppressor ships from us to your door.

WHY WE RECOMMEND A FORM 4

Since October 9, 2026, ATF isn't requiring approval or registration for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs. In states that allow it, you can take one home on a Form 4473 alone. We offer that option. We still recommend the Form 4 for most buyers. A registered item complies with the NFA no matter who's enforcing it. A 4473 item depends on today's policy.

• It's yours for life. You register once, there's nothing to renew, and the federal tax is $0.
• Approvals come back in days. ATF's August 2026 averages were 6 days for individual eForm 4s and 20 days for trusts.
• You can share it. On an NFA trust, the trustees you name can possess and use the item under the trust's terms.
• You can travel with it. A registered suppressor doesn't need ATF approval to cross state lines. You still follow the laws of every state you enter. SBRs and SBSs still require a Form 20 before you cross state lines.
• Resale and inheritance have a clear path. A sale goes to the next owner on a Form 4, and an heir gets it on a tax-exempt Form 5.
• It's already compliant if the rules change. ATF says enforcement could resume, and federal law doesn't generally allow registering an NFA item after the fact.

THE AUGUST 5 RULING AND ATF'S OCTOBER 9 POLICY

On August 5, 2026, a federal court in Texas barred enforcement of the NFA's registration and transfer-approval rules for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs. That order covers only the plaintiffs and those named in it. On October 9, ATF said it will stop enforcing those rules for everyone, as a matter of enforcement discretion. Read our full update.

Neither one repealed the NFA. ATF says enforcement could resume if Congress adds a new tax, the injunction is overturned, or the Justice Department rescinds its guidelines.

State law hasn't changed. Eight states and Washington, D.C. prohibit suppressors outright. Fourteen more allow them only with NFA compliance, so a 4473 suppressor isn't an option there. A Form 4 suppressor meets those laws.

FORM 4 OR 4473: YOU CHOOSE AT CHECKOUT

• 4473, shipped to your home. 19 states. For now, you'll need a license to carry or concealed weapons permit issued by your state of residence. Details.
• Shipped to your local dealer. When you choose this during checkout, you'll pick your dealer from a list. If your dealer isn't on it, you can enter their information.

The 42-state count is for suppressors. On a Form 4, SBRs and SBSs ship to 39 states. On a 4473, suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs ship home in the same 19 states.
