SILENCERCO SWITCHBACK 22 SUPPRESSOR - MODULAR RIMFIRE SILENCER, TITANIUM, .22LR THROUGH 5.7X28, FULL-AUTO RATED

The SilencerCo Switchback 22 is the most configurable rimfire suppressor on the market. It has four distinct configurations, three lengths and a reversible baffle orientation, in a single titanium-and-stainless can. At its shortest it measures 2.8 inches and weighs 3.7 oz, making it one of the most compact rimfire options available. At its longest, it stretches to 5.75 inches at 6.9 oz for maximum sound reduction. It is full-auto rated, user-serviceable, and covers everything from .22 LR and 17 HMR through 5.7x28mm. The updated black finish adds improved corrosion resistance over earlier versions.

CAPITOL ARMORY'S OPINION

Most rimfire suppressor buyers fall into one of two camps. They want the shortest possible can to keep their setup compact, or they want maximum sound reduction and do not care about length. The Switchback 22 is one of the rare suppressors that handles both without compromise. The tool-free configuration system means you are not locked into a decision at purchase. You can run it short on a .22 pistol in the morning and extend it fully for a quiet afternoon session on a bolt gun without any tools or hassle.

The baffle re-orientation feature is the most unique feature. In the extended configuration, you can reverse the baffle stack to optimize performance for either pistol or rifle use. That is a meaningful difference, and its something no other rimfire suppressor offers. The titanium tube keeps weight down while the stainless steel baffles give you the durability needed for full-auto use and 5.7x28mm compatibility. User serviceability means cleaning is straightforward, which matters on a rimfire suppressor that will see lead fouling over time.

What is the difference between the Switchback and the Sparrow?

Both are SilencerCo rimfire suppressors covering the same caliber range, but they take fundamentally different approaches to the job. The Sparrow 22 is SilencerCo's original suppressor and has been a bestseller for years. It is a fixed-length can built around a monolithic core. One solid baffle stack inside a stainless steel housing. The design is simple, extremely durable, and easy to clean. The Sparrow's Multi-Part Containment (MPC) system prevents the baffle seizure that plagues many rimfire suppressors after heavy use, and it can go roughly 2,000 rounds between cleanings. At 5.08 inches and 6.5 oz, it is not the lightest option but it is rock-solid and consistently quiet at 112.7 dB on .22 LR.

The Switchback 22 is the newer, more configurable option. Instead of a fixed-length tube, it is modular. Three length configurations and a reversible baffle orientation that lets you optimize performance. The titanium tube makes it lighter than the Sparrow in its shorter configurations, and in its longest rifle-optimized setup it is measurably quieter. The Switchback is the better pick if you own both rimfire pistols and rifles and want one suppressor genuinely dialed in for each. The Sparrow is the better pick if you want the simplest, most maintenance-friendly option and do not need to reconfigure it. Both are excellent. The choice comes down to what platforms you are running and how much you value modularity.

How does the rifle-optimized configuration work?

The Switchback ships in pistol-optimized configuration by default. In the full-length setup, the suppressor body is split into two tube sections connected by a coupler. The front tube section contains four individual stainless steel baffles. In the default orientation, those baffles point rearward toward the muzzle, consistent with the baffles in the rear section and optimized for the gas pressure profile of a pistol. In the rifle-optimized configuration, you flip the front baffle stack so those four baffles point forward, downrange. This changes how the suppressor manages the lower, more consistent gas pressure coming from a rifle barrel and produces better sound reduction in that application.

The process is straightforward: use the included spanner wrenches to unscrew the front cap, remove the front tube section, flip the baffle stack 180 degrees, reassemble, and torque back down. No special tools or gunsmithing required. The rifle-optimized configuration is only available in the full-length setup. If you are primarily running a .22 bolt gun or semi-auto rifle and want maximum suppression, this is the configuration to use. For pistols or all-around use, leave the baffles in the default orientation.

Does it need to be cleaned?

Yes. Lead-based .22 LR ammunition produces more fouling than centerfire brass-jacketed ammunition, and that lead buildup accumulates inside the baffle stack over time. Left uncleaned, fouling can degrade sound performance and eventually make disassembly difficult. A general rule of thumb is every 500-1500 rounds.

The good news is the Switchback is user-serviceable and easy to break down for cleaning. Unlike suppressors welded construction, the Switchback's individual stainless steel baffles separate completely, giving you full access to every surface. The standard approach for rimfire suppressors is an ultrasonic cleaner or manually removing lead with a metal brush and pick. SilencerCo's field manual recommends a lead-dissolving solution soak, rinsing with clean water, and allowing all components to dry fully before reassembly. Dispose of any lead-solvent solution as hazardous material. Do not pour it down a drain. The two spanner wrenches included with the suppressor are all you need for disassembly and reassembly.

Do I need any adapters?

The Switchback 22 has a standard 1/2x28 thread interface, which covers the vast majority of .22 LR rifles and many .22 pistols right out of the box. If your host has a 1/2x28 threaded barrel, you can mount the Switchback directly with no additional hardware. However, a number of popular pistol platforms use non-standard threading or require an adapter to accept a suppressor at all.

Capitol Armory carries the full range of SilencerCo Delta adapters to cover popular platforms that need them. If you own a Walther P22 or S&W M&P 22, you will need the Walther P22/S&W M&P22 Adapter. For an FN Five-seveN or PS90 chambered in 5.7x28mm, add the SilencerCo FN 5.7 Adapter. Sig 1911-22 and GSG 1911 owners will want the Sig Sauer & GSG 1911 .22LR Adapter, and Sig Mosquito owners need the Sig Mosquito Thread Adapter. For M&P 22 Compact platforms, the M&P 22 Compact Adapter is the right fit. The 1/2x28 to 1/2x28 Rimfire Extension is useful when you need additional standoff distance on hosts with shorter barrel protrusion. If you are unsure which adapter your host requires, give us a call at 512-879-1068, and we can help you get the right combination before you order.

How do I change the lengths?

The Switchback offers three length options. Short (2.8 inches, 3.7 oz), medium, and full-length (5.75 inches, 6.9 oz). Additionally, in the full-length configuration, it can be optimized for rifle use. Changes are made using the two spanner wrenches included with the suppressor. The suppressor body consists of a back cap, a short tube section, a coupler baffle, a long tube section, and a front cap. To go from full-length to medium, unscrew the front cap and remove the long tube section and front cap, leaving the short tube and coupler assembled. To go to the short configuration, remove the long tube entirely and thread the front cap directly onto the short tube. Reassemble in reverse for longer configurations. All connections are threaded, just torque down firmly with the spanner wrenches to ensure a gas-tight seal before shooting. The back cap is the serialized part, so all configurations are built around that rear assembly. If you need to reconfigure in the field, the two wrenches are the only tools required.
